Students should have at least a working knowledge of fractions and decimals, plus an intuitive understanding of the nomenclature, terminology, vocabulary, and formulae of basic geometry. The historical part of this unit may be used in any grade level, preferably middle school.     Extractions: On the centenary of Cajori's birth, in 1959, Colorado College sponsored a public lecture in his honour and memory. This was given on 25th February 1959 by the distinguished Norwegian mathematician and historian of mathematics Oystein Ore. (It was on 'Pascal and the invention of probability theory', and didn't mention Cajori once.) The next year another Cajori lecture was delivered, on April 21st 1960, this time by one of Cajori's former students, Harold Davis of Northwestern University. Davis gave rather fuller attention to Cajori for the first part of his lecture, with several reminiscences. The local newspaper the Gazette Telegraph reported this occasion as "the annual Cajori lecture", but it has not been possible to trace any subsequent one; it seems that there was an annual Cajori lecture, but for only the two years 1959 and 1960. More recently, the Mathematics Department has instituted a Cajori Prize, as its top award for mathematical prowess, awarded most years since 1986; a plaque hanging in the mathematics lounge records the names.     Extractions: A conic section (red curve) is the result of an intersection between a cone and a plane. Depending on the angle of intersection, the result can be a hyperbola, parabola, circle, or ellipse. It is Apollonius of Perga (Απολλώνιος ο Περγαίος ) (about 262 BC - about 190 BC), a Greek geometer, who is usually considered the inventor of the conic sections that leads to the circle, ellipse, parabola and hyperbola that are the possible trajectories of a body in a gravitational field (At least if we ignore some relativistic effects). His book describes the history of the slide rule from its invention in the 1620s up to the start of the 20th century. Those of us living in the age of email, the internet and air travel can only marvel at the effort he must have expended in locating documents held in libraries all over Europe and extracting pertinent information. This version was based on a copy in the Whipple Museum of the History of Science, Cambridge University. The book also has 17 plates of slide rules. We look at two ways to introduce e without differentiation by first principles: a graphical approach considering and and a compound interest approach. A little history Do you ever wonder whether mathematics is discovered or invented? Regularities in the physical world that lead to numbers like and e seem to lend weight to the former proposition, while reading the history of mathematics, and finding out how various mathematical creations were constructed to meet particular needs of the times, I am led to think that the latter proposition has much merit. It seems that many European mathematicians in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries occupied themselves with the search to make calculations easier, in particular to find ways to replace multiplications by additions. This led to Napier's invention of logarithms, which is well described in Lecture 17 of 'Great Moments in Mathematics' by Howard Eves (Eves, 1983). He explains that Napier's logarithms were not originally written about in terms of indices at all, and were not, as is often assumed, logarithms in base e.
