The British collection is particularly strong in 20th century work. The Bristol school is well represented in the collection by works by, for example, Francis Danby (1793-1861); Samuel Colman; and E V Rippingille. There is also work by William James Muller (1812-1845), the best known Bristol-born artist.

List of recent publications Newsletter distribution I must apologise that the mailing list did not get properly sorted out for the issues of January and February when the original small distribution was considerably extended - there are now almost 100 recipients. As was pointed out to me, care should be taken when large groups are being circulated by e-mail in this way. This is certainly not always done, even by organisations who should know better, but I hope that what I perpetrated in my haste to get the two newsletters distributed I have now been able to retrieve, given a full month to get things sorted. Where are the books?

Obituary - Mr Jim Hancock 1914 - 2001 J New finds on display at Taunton Museum O Also now on view at Taunton Castle is another remarkable recent acquisition. This is a pair of late Anglo-Saxon sculptures in oolitic limestone, recovered from the floor of a farm building near Congresbury. The two blocks are carved in high relief with what appears to have been part of an external frieze from a major ecclesiastical building, probably the Minster church at Congresbury itself. One block shows the lower part of a female figure with fluttering, angular draperies while the other, a cornerstone, shows on two adjoining faces the haloed heads of Christ and a tonsured male saint framed in round headed arches. Full scholarly publication of these important pieces, which probably date from the late 11th century, is awaited with interest.
