In that time the practice of shipbuilding had made significant progress. Bouguer was perhaps the first scientist to make use of mathematics in construction and operations of a vessel. Also, this work was the first that taught calculating of the center of gravity of a hull (metacenter). The use of displacements and centers of gravity allowed shipwrights to create more stable ships. Although, it is unlikely that this work had much influence on the shipwrights of the time, Bouguer lays the foundation that allowed Duhamel du Monceau to later advance this work. The work is divided into three books:

(1752 and 1758) Henri Louis Duhamel du Monceau published The Elements of Naval Architecture, a Practical Treatise on the Construction of Ships Paris. C.A. Jombert, 1752. Like his predecessor, Bouguer, Duhamel du Monceau was a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences as well as various other organizations (listed on the cover page seen below). It should not come as a surprise then that both his and Bouguer's works were published by the same publisher and concern the identical topics. The 1754 English treatise by Mungo Murray is a compilation, translation and modification of much Duhamel du Monceau and Bouguer's treatises. Duhamel du Monceau beings the treatise by acknowledging the work of Bouguer and Euler. Directly after he makes note that he wishes his work to be translated into English. Also, Duhamel du Monceau is clear that the purpose of his work is for the instruction of young or new shipwrights. The book continues the trend of shipbuilding on a mathematical basis and is divided into three parts: -Finding or creating the proper external shape of the ship that allows for good service.
