Extractions: ed. by Marlow Anderson, Victor Katz, and Robin Wilson It is not difficult to understand why knowing the history of mathematics is both interesting and important to the lives of many research mathematicians. It is also not difficult to see why it is hard to write about this history. Very few historians have a good enough understanding of mathematics to write histories which answer the questions that mathematicians want to know the answer to, but on the flip side very few mathematicians know enough about historical scholarship to truly be able to understand the mathematical history. This task is somewhat easier when studying the mathematicians of the 18 th or 19 th century, whose culture we understand fairly well, but as Eleanor Robson writes in one of the essays in the collection under review: "we are already more or less familiar with Galois's cultural background, or Newton's ... this allows us to contextualize the mathematical content of their work ... but when we start to study mathematics from cultures whose languages, social practices, and common knowledge we do not share, we have to work considerably harder at positioning it within a historically and mathematically plausible framework." Sherlock Holmes in Babylon , published by the Mathematical Association of America, collects forty-four articles on the history of mathematics which have been published in the various MAA journals such as the

Each of the individuals listed below was included in the Dictionary of Scientific Biography . I have developed this single comprehensive list of some 700 individuals from the Scientific Revolution to facilitate a ' First Search ' capability. The purpose is twofold. This list is designed at once to allow users a general overview of the Scientific Community while also providing quick access to basic information on each individual. By design, 'First Search' entries are short and searchable and serves as an Index. After surveying this Comprehensive Index, users are then advised to conduct a '

Newton was tormented by the need for a new mathematical concept to allow him to describe and calculate the forces and complex motion of the moon and planets described in his laws of motion. The follow-on question and activity have readers estimate the area of a circle by inscribing, first, a square and then an octagon in the circle and finding their areas. (Author/JRS)

Sorkin Received 25 March 1986 We associate to any quantum field propagating in the background metric of a black hole an effective density matrix whose statistical entropy can be interpreted as a contribution to the total entropy of the black hole. By evaluating this contribution in a simplified case, we show that in general it can be expected to be finite and proportional to the area of the black hole. As a by-product of our calculation we obtain a general expression for the entropy of any real Gaussian density matrix. URL: http://link.aps.org/abstract/PRD/v34/p373

Extractions: Excerpt Knowing and Doing Historians of science are thus increasingly concerned with the evidence offered by instruments, or at least are increasingly engaged in instrument studies. The caveat needs to be added, because this development in the discipline has not always been acknowledged by those who care for the collections of instrumentsnamely, the museum curators, much less the private collectors. Complaints from instrument [End Page 195] specialists about the lack of interest in their collections among the historians are almost as commonly heard now as they were in former years, when they might have been justified. This is at first surprising and frustrating, and might temptingly be attributed to mere lack of awareness on the part of curators, but the two approaches to...
