One of the most sparkling and prolonged scientific jousting matches took place between Niels Bohr and Albert Einstein in the 20s and 30s. The latter, who could never accept the probabilistic nature of quantum mechanics, produced a series of gedanken experiments (thought experiments) designed to disprove the new theory. Bohr would then attempt to show where Einstein had gone wrong. In one of Bohr's successful attempts at this, he was especially pleased to note that Einstein had forgotten that according to his own theory of general relativity clocks run more slowly under the influence of a gravitational field. In terms of scientific brilliance Niels Bohr is right at the top, perhaps second only to Einstein in the hit parade of 20th century scientists. It seems that every scientist who met Bohr came away with an impression of his deep intellect and his kind, gentle manner. (The phrase "large domed head" seems to occur frequently, too.) Bohr lies at the end of a list of philosopher/scientists which charts the establishment of atomism in the scientific canon over the centuries: from the pre-Socratics Democritus and Leucippus;to Epicurus and Lucretius; to Dalton who was the first to create the concept of atoms in a modern scientific format; to Rutherford and Geiger who demonstrated the nuclear structure of the atom; to Bohr who was able to unite Rutherford's atom with the quantum concept of Planck.

Bohr was born in Copenhagen on Oct. 7, 1885. His father, Christian Bohr, professor of physiology at the University of Copenhagen, was known for his work on the physical and chemical aspects of respiration. His mother, Ellen Adler Bohr, came from a wealthy Jewish family prominent in Danish banking and parliamentary circles. Bohr's scientific interests and abilities were evident early, and they were encouraged and fostered in a warm, intellectual family atmosphere. Niels's younger brother, Harald, became a brilliant mathematician. Bohr distinguished himself at the University of Copenhagen, winning a gold medal from the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters for his theoretical analysis of and precise experiments on the vibrations of water jets as a way of determining surface tension. Bohr was born in Copenhagen and was educated at the University of Copenhagen at the time when Max Planck had just begun the development of quantum mechanics. After completing his dissertation on the electron theory of metals in 1911, Bohr went briefly to Cambridge and then on to Manchester, England. There he worked under Ernest Rutherford, who in 1911 had published the theory that the atom consisted of a central nucleus orbited by electrons. The problem with this model was that, according to classical electrodynamic theory, the electrons should radiate and therefore lose energy and spiral into the nucleus. With the problem of atomic structure in mind, Bohr worked in Manchester relentlessly from May through July of 1912 and succeeded in obtaining a formula correctly describing the absorption of helium nuclei by other atomic nuclei. His guiding notion was that the energy lost by a helium nucleus in flying through an atom depends not on the size of the atom but rather on the distances between the nucleus and the various electrons in the atom. In 1916, Bohr was appointed professor of theoretical physics at the University of Copenhagen, and in 1922 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for physics. In the following decades he continued to work on the implications of his theory, notably putting an earlier knowledge of surface tension to use in his "droplet model" of the nucleus, which treats the nucleus as if it were a water droplet held together by its surface tension.

The complementarity is a difficult concept, but it means something like this: the conservation law and the description in terms of space and time are both necessary in physics, but they become incompatible in quantum physics and they become complementary. Aside from his professional contributions to physics such as atomic models (1913), he played an essential role for the development of quantum physics, as the leader of the Niels Bohr Institute (1921-) of the University of Copenhagen. He studied at the Univ. of Copenhagen (Ph.D. 1911) and carried on research on the structure of the atom at Cambridge under Sir James J. Thomson and at Manchester under Lord Ernest Rutherford. In 1916, Bohr became professor of theoretical physics at the Univ. of Copenhagen, and in 1920 he was made director of the Institute of Theoretical Physics, which he was instrumental in founding. Rutherford had discovered the nucleus of the atom in 1911, but classical theory was unable to explain the stability of the nuclear model of the atom. Bohr provided the solution to this problem in 1913, when he postulated that electrons move around the nucleus of the atom in restricted orbits and explained the manner in which the atom absorbs and emits energy. He thus combined the quantum theory with this concept of atomic structure. Much of the knowledge of modern physics was made possible by Bohr's initial revolutionary assumption that atomic processes cannot be explained by classical laws alone. Bohr was a leading figure in the continuing development of the quantum theory over the next twenty years. He received the 1922 Nobel Prize in Physics.
