What distressingly few of us realize is that almost all of these Taylors, except for that of the Taylor series, are the same Taylor, Geoffrey Ingram, who was (not merely by this criterion) one of the great physicists of the twentieth century, among the last masters of both theory and experiment. Aside from one early experiment on wave mechanics (where he got accurate results, which nobody could make sense of at the time), Taylor had nothing to do with so-called modern physics, with quantum mechanics and relativity, continuing instead the tradition of classical mechanics, particularly fluid mechanics and the theory of plastic (that is, permanently deformable) materials. He pioneered many fields of research which are still active, if not downright huge, and then turned to something else, and something else again, almost always finding simple, elegant and above all practical ways of coming to grips with them. He was, for instance, the originator of the statistical theory of turbulence, and the author of fully a quarter of the papers in the standard collection of seminal papers . Had he not been distracted by war work, he very likely would have scooped Kolmogorov in discovering the turbulent energy cascade (he'd been working on the component ideas since 1917). When, in 1945, he learned of these ideas from a graduate student (Batchelor) and a German prisoner of war (Heisenberg!), he foresaw the highly abstract, un-applied character the theory of turbulence would assume, and turned away from the subject. This is typical of the old British tradition of applied mathematics and mechanics, which he embodied; but a bit amusing in the grandson of George Boole, the founder of mathematical logic.

    Extractions: electric pen not in the Registry below, please email me Edison's electric pen was the first electric motor driven appliance produced and sold in the United States, developed as an offshoot of Edison's telegraphy research. Edison and Batchelor noticed that as the stylus of their printing telegraph punctured the paper, the chemical solution left a mark underneath. This led them to conceive of using a perforated sheet of paper as a stencil for making multiple copies, and to develop the electric pen as a perforating device. US patent for "autographic printing" was issued to Edison on 8 August 1876. The electric pen was sold as part of a complete duplicating outfit, which included the pen, a cast-iron holder with a wooden insert, a wet-cell battery on a cast-iron stand, and a cast-iron flatbed duplicating press with ink roller. All the cast-iron parts were black japanned, with gold striping or decoration. The hand-held electric pen was powered by the wet-cell battery, which was wired to an electric motor mounted on top of a pen-like shaft. The motor drove a reciprocating needle which, according to the manual, could make 50 punctures per second, or 3,000 per minute. The user was instructed to place the stencil on firm blotting paper on a flat surface, then use the pen to write or draw naturally to form words and designs as a series of minute perforations in the stencil.

Over the last few years of his long life Charlie was the subject of increasing attention from young musicians in search of locally sourced Australian 'traditional' or 'folk' music. During 1983/4 he made some half-a-dozen visits to NSW festivals, performing in concert and for dancing, as well as informally. The appearance of Charlie and his music caused a bit of a stir in the Australian folk revival, spawning a number of new field collectors and a renewed focus on Australian vernacular music(s). The captivating sound of Charlie's playing and music caused this impact - a unique blend of the familiar and the exotic. An awareness developed that Australian sourced music could actually be attractive to play and dance to. This article will attempt to locate Charlie and his music within the context of his life and historical community and, belatedly, on the contemporary stage of the Australian folk revival. We first met Charlie at his small property, 'Emu Vale' in mid 1981. The middle of a long drought had barely left a blade of grass standing.

George is credited with creating the operating lease business for used aircraft when he pioneered operating leases for marginal developing South American carriers, among others, in the 1960s. His company, International Air Leases also pioneered the export of used Boeing and Douglas aircraft to Asia and Africa as well. In the early 1950s he founded Arrow Air, which went on to have a checkered history (sometimes competing with operators using leased George Batchelor aircraft), but which is once more going strong under new management. The future of Batchelor's current finance operation, Aerospace Finance, is unknown. He was also a renowned philanthropist, having contributed close to $100 million to South Florida charitable and public service organizations, including $15 million to build the Batchelor Children's Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine. He is survived by his new wife (whom he married only three weeks before his death), four children, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
