Born in a working class Philadelphia neighborhood in 1872, Barnes received a B.S. degree from Central High School in Philadelphia and, at the age of twenty, his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. He also studied chemistry and pharmacology at the University of Berlin, and at the Ruprecht-Karls-Univerität in Heidelberg, where he befriended German scientist Herman Hille. Barnes' extensive personal studies in psychology, philosophy and art - particularly his reading of John Dewey, George Santayana, and William James - led him to form his own theories about art and education. Combining his educational concepts and his compassion for the working man with his burgeoning interest in the arts, Barnes initiated educational seminars and hung paintings by William Glackens, Ernest Lawson, and Maurice Prendergast in his Argyrol factory to be studied and discussed by his workers. His first formal classes in art appreciation were held at the factory for the benefit of his employees. In 1918, Dr. Barnes attended John Dewey's seminars at Columbia University to study the scientific method in education. Dewey and Barnes quickly became close friends and collaborators. Dewey's influence and a desire to provide nondiscriminatory access to art and education led Barnes to create The Barnes Foundation in 1922, naming Dewey as the Foundation's first Director of Education in 1923. A new force had entered the world… a self-made man with substantial financial and intellectual resources, combative intensity, relentless curiosity, a keen eye for art, and a deeply-rooted respect for the common man.

Scott Fitzgerald came first, but Ernest Hemingway had the last word. In October 2001, the trustees of Hemingway's estate sent a fax to an unsuspecting DeWitt Sage. The filmmaker's documentary, F. Scott Fitzgerald: Winter Dreams , had just aired, and, "if there was a villain in that film, it was Ernest Hemingway," admits Sage. "We were prepared for the worst," says Sage, but it is not what they got. Instead, Hemingway's trustees offered the filmmakers unprecedented access to archival records and to family members and friends who had seldom, if ever, spoken about the writer on film. The result is Ernest Hemingway: Rivers to the Sea . The latest installment in WNET's American Masters documentary series will air September 14 on PBS. The estate's timing was perfect. "Hemingway remains tremendously interesting," says Susan Lacy, executive producer and creator of the series. "His influence does not cease." The film includes interviews with Patrick Hemingway, the author's only surviving son. "Patrick Hemingway doesn't do a lot of interviews," explains Lacy. "This original footage and the archives allowed us to do an original treatment. This isn't a traditional biography. It's very much about the inner voice. There was the public Hemingway and then there was the voice of the writer."

[1] Several controversies brought his name to public attention. The first two are closely interrelated: his "gorilla sermons" and his vehement rejection of sacramentalism during the Prayer Book revision, and the third, The Rise of Christianity . All three issues led from his desire to make Christianity acceptable in an age of science; thus he was very much a product of his own age. [2] Although born in Altringham on, some would say appropriately, All Fool's Day, he was a "son" of Birmingham. His parents (John) Starkie Barnes (1893-1922) and Jane Elizabeth (nee Kerry) (d. 1938) moved there in 1876 when Starkie became the head of Elkington Street School. Barnes was educated first at Clifton Road, King's Norton, then in 1889 he moved to Tindal Street School, before starting his secondary years at Camp Hill Grammar in 1883, but from 1892 he entered King Edward VI Grammar School as a foundation scholar, [3] before winning a scholarship for mathematics in 1892 to Trinity College, Cambridge. Though his parent's were non-Conformist, while at King Edward's he was confirmed into the Anglican church and attended St. John's, Sparkhill. While at Trinity he was second wrangler in 1896, President of the Union and he excelled at mathematics. He published no less than 28 academic journal articles between 1897 and 1910. [4] His main research areas was with the theory of functions. While at Cambridge Barnes also influenced Gilbert Hardy and J. E. Littlewood, the two greatest pure mathematicians of the early twentieth century. Barnes also gave his name to a lemma: Barnes' lemma. [5] At 35 he was made a FRS.
