John Thornhill, in the London Financial Times (Dec. 4, 2004): Stroll into any Parisian bookstore and you will immediately appreciate one of France's great national obsessions: America. The display shelves are crammed with books on almost every aspect of American life. In the run-up to the US presidential election it seemed as though every opportunistic French writer with any connection to America had a theory to propound or a story to sell about the world's sole hyperpuissance. There has also been a ready market for translations of those American authors - such as Michael Moore, Paul Krugman and Kitty Kelley - who have been less than complimentary about their more rightwing compatriots.... In L'ennemi Americain, a fascinating genealogy of French anti- Americanism, Philippe Roger argues that the phenomenon is best viewed as a recurrent discourse that has periodically surfaced in French thought. At different times, anti-Americanism has been trumpeted by the hard right in French politics and then by the hard left. But this discourse has been constantly sustained by a corps of French intellectuals, for whom anti-Americanism has almost become a defining feature. In Roger's view, this anti-Americanism remains something of an enigma: objectively, there is little reason why the French should have been so cool about the US for so long. The two countries share many of the same ideological values, boast similar political institutions, and have fought many of the same fights. The French general Lafayette helped American insurgents defeat their colonial British masters. The Americans have twice helped save France from the Germans. The French gave the Americans one of their most treasured national symbols: the Statue of Liberty. The Americans have sheltered France from the threat of the Soviet Union.

Extractions: by Sherman Stein Sherman Stein, author of a calculus textbook, a monograph on the theory of tiling, a study of Archimedes , and Strength in Numbers (the latter two previously reviewed on MAA Online ), here presents another installment of mathematics for the general public. How the Other Half Thinks: Adventures in Mathematical Reasoning consists of eight short chapters, each of which sets up and then solves a nontrivial mathematical problem. Proofs from THE BOOK Chapters 2 and 4 deal with random strings of a's and b's. In Chapter 2, Stein asks how long such a string must be before the number of occurrences of one of the letters exceeds the number of occurrences of the other by 2. The expected value of this length is given by an infinite series. Stein evaluates the series by a clever rearrangement which goes back to the 14th century scholastic Nicole Oresme. The same series occurs in Chapter 4, where Stein computes the expected length of a run of a's or b's. Another problem about probability is treated in Chapter 6: in an election involving two candidates, what is the probability that one candidate will lead during the entire count? The solution here is based on a geometric reflection argument.

Extractions: by Alex Bogomolny August 2001 In the 18 th century, Compte de Buffon (1707-1788) posed and solved the very first geometric probability problem . A needle of a given length L is tossed on a wooden floor with evenly spaced cracks, distance D apart. What is the probability of the needle hitting a crack? The answer he discovered with the help of integral calculus is given by the simple formula [ Beckmann Dörrie Eves Kasner ... Stein P = 2L/ p D With P approximated by the ratio of hits to the total number of tosses, the formula offers a way of evaluating p , an observation that eventually led Pierre Simon Laplace (1749-1827) to propose a method, known today as the Monte Carlo Method, for numerical evaluation of various quantities by realizing appropriate random events. History records several names of people who applied the method manually to approximate p . A Captain Fox [ Beckmann , p. 163] indulged himself while recuperating from wounds incurred in the Civil War. H. Dörrie [ Dörrie , p. 77] mentions Wolf from Zurich (1850) who obtained
