Albertus was born at Larvingen, on the Danube, sometime between 1193 and 1206, and the term Magnus is not the result of his reputation, but is the Latin equivalent of his family name, de Groot. According to tradition, he was the inventor of the pistol and the cannon, but, while is unlikely that the credit is due to him for this, the mere fact that he was thus acknowledged indicates that his scientific skill was recognized by a few, if only a few, of the men of his own time. We can understand why Thomas Aquinas was so taken with his older confrere's desire to explore, his willingness to dialogue, and to take bold stands. Such shared values integrated and held in balance by a clarity of faith and consurning love of neighbor put them both on the cutting edge of theological development and made them "risk-takers" in their service of Church and society. History has accorded Thomas the greater role. Indeed, when Dante (Paradiso X) approaches the garland of lights that seemed caught up in dance, it is Thomas Aquinas who steps forward to introduce the luminous band, beginning with "Albert of Cologne, my friend and teacher." A few years ago the late Father James A. Weisheipl, O.P., explored Thomas's relationship to his friend and teacher. While Thomas derived much from his master, as his writings show, the reverse is not true. Albert, it seems, did not keep up with his student's work until after Thomas death, when he took it upon himself to defend what had been their common stand against traditionalist critics. By then well advanced in age, Albert had Thomas' works read to him, so the story goes. Thus it is only in Albert's later works, written mostly after Thomas' death, and the scripture commentaries in particular, that Thomas' influence is apparent.

During his study in Northern Italy he joined the Dominican order in 1223 in the presence of Jordan of Saxony, the successor of Saint Dominic. From 1228 Albert teached in several towns, such as Hildesheim, Freiburg, Regensburg, Strasbourg and Cologne. In 1241 he was sent to Paris for further study. Albert the Great was a medieval theologian and "Man of Universal Knowledge." Born in Lauingen, Bavaria sometime between 1193 and 1206, he was a bishop, doctor and saint of the Roman Catholic Church, having as one of his students Saint Thomas Aquinas. He taught in Paris and at the Studium Generale in Cologne, a university run by the Order of the Dominicans in the 13th century and one of the first universities in Europe. A dominant figure, he was an influential teacher, an experienced traveler, a keen observer of life and nature and the one learned man of the Golden Age to be called "the Great." He was later declared a saint by the catholic church. With his open law book and profound expression, Big Al, as he is informally called, is the bigger than life symbol of the legal profession to Law Center students and faculty.
