We owe this next report to Shaikh al-Muzaffar Mansur ibn al-Mubarak al-Wasiti, commonly known by the nickname al-Judada [Fruit of the Palm Tree]. He said: "I felt trapped in a state of paralysis, but then he said to me: 'Hand me that book of yours!' So I opened it, and lo and behold, there was nothing inside it but blank paper, with not a single letter written on it! I gave it to the Shaikh, and he thumbed through its pages, then he said: 'This is the Book of the Excellent Merits of the Qur'an [Kitab Fada'il al-Qur'an], by Ibn ad-Zaris Muhammad.' When he handed it back to me, I saw that it was indeed the Book of the Excellent Merits of the Qur'an [Kitab Fada'il al-Qur'an], by Ibn ad-Zaris Muhammad, written in a most handsome calligraphic script! "The Shaikh (may Allah be well pleased with him) then said to me: 'Are you ready to turn in repentance from saying with your tongue what is not in your heart?' I said: 'Yes, O my master,' so he told me to stand up. I obediently rose to my feet, and I had forgotten all about philosophy and the principles of spirituality! They had been totally erased from my inner being [batin], as if they had never captured my interest." A braggart benefits from Shaikh 'Abd al-Qadir's intercesssion.

Mathematics Advancements by Muslims: Introduction: Just as with science, the Muslims learned from the Greeks, Egyptians, Indians, and Babylonians. Many translations took place in the House of Wisdom in Baghdad, the capital of the Abbasid Empire. The Muslim scholars there translated the works of the Greeks who loved mathematics and geometry, including Euclid's work on geometry. They borrowed from India a number system that had a zero and rewrote it as their own. They borrowed from the Babylonians whose number system was based on 60 (just like the minutes in an hour), and from the ancient Egyptians who had the math and geometry skills to build incredible pyramids. So from the beginning, "Arabic math" was a mixing of international knowledge. But the Muslims made additional contributions of their own, and through their study and written work, they preserved the knowledge of mathematics that otherwise might have been lost to the world. Iraqi youth assemble before overcrowded fuel stations with each one of them carrying a small tank that can barely allow for 20 liters of fuel. One can await 24 hours in a long queue to take his "ration" but it is worthwhile for them, given the boom in oil sale in postwar Iraq.

The more the slave realises this difference, the more he increases in love and servitude towards Allâh, so he turns further away from worshipping, loving and obeying anything except Allâh. Those misguided mushrikin , on the other hand, view Allâh and His creation as equal. Ibrahim said: Do you then see whom you have been worshipping you and your fathers before you? For they are enemies to me; not so the Lord and Cherisher of the Worlds. Sûrah Al Shuara: Ayah 75-77 But they use as evidence the ambiguous words of their shaykhs, just as the Christians did the words of their priest. An example of this is the concept of fana (extinction of individual consciousness, recedence of the ego, obliteration of the self). Fana is of three types:

A notable jurist of the Imamyia shiite, the late al- Sadr defined a religious law as "a legislation issued by God to organize and direct human life" During the lifetime of the Prophet, Muslims obtained the laws directly from him. The Prophet not only conveyed the laws from God but also explained and clarified them. The Quran informs us that Holy Book and the Prophet's traditions are the two sources of legislation and laws as follows: "and then we have set you on the right path. follow it and don't follow the whims of those who are ignorant" , and "whatever the Prophet gives you, accept it; and whatever he forbids you forbear"

Extractions: Mathematics Muslims have made immense contributions to almost all branches of the sciences and arts, but mathematics was their favourite subject and its development owes a great deal to the genius of Arab and persian scholars. The advancement in different branches of mathematical science commenced during the Caliphate of Omayyads, and Hajjaj bin Yusuf, who was himself a translator of Euclid as well as a great patron of mathematicians. Musa al-Khwarizmi (780850 A.D.) a native of Khwarizm, who lived in the reign of Mamun-ar-Rashid, was one of the greatest mathematicians of all times. He composed the oldest Islamic works on arithmetic and algebra which were the principal source of knowledge on the subject for a fairly long time. George Sarton pays glowing tribute to this outstanding Muslim mathematician and considers him "one of the greatest scientists of his race and the greatest of his time".' He systematised Greek and Hindu mathematical knowledge and profoundly influenced mathematical thought during mediaeval times. He championed the use of Hindu numerals and has the distinction of being the author of the oldest Arabic work on arithmetic known as Kitab-ul Jama wat Tafriq. The original version of this work has disappeared but its Latin translation Trattati a" Arithmetic edited by Bon Compagni in 1157 at Rome is still in existence.

Other Dimensions of His Prophethood The Ethos Created by the Messenger Previous Recommend Print Send Feedback It is difficult for us to understand Prophet Muhammad fully. As we tend to compartmentalize the universe, life, and humanity itself, we have no unitary vision. However, Prophet Muhammad perfectly combined a philosopher's intellect, a commander valor, a scientist's genius, a sage's wisdom, a statesman's insight and administrative ability, a Sufi master's spiritual profundity, and a scholar's knowledge in his own person. Philosophers produce students, not followers; social or revolutionary leaders make followers, not complete people; Sufi masters make "lords of submission," not active fighters or intellectuals. But in Prophet Muhammad we find the characteristics of a philosopher, a revolutionary leader, a warrior and statesman, and a Sufi master. His school is one of the intellect and thought, revolution, submission and discipline, and goodness, beauty, ecstasy, and movement. Prophet Muhammad transformed crude, ignorant, savage, and obstinate desert Arabs into an army of skilled fighters, a community of sincere devotees of a sublime cause, a society of gentleness and compassion, an assembly of sainthood, and a host of intellectuals and scholars. Nowhere else do we see such fervor and ardor combined with gentleness, kindness, sincerity, and compassion. This is a characteristic unique to the Muslim community, one that has been visible since its earliest days.
