Bethlehem Steel Soccer Club -- October 31, 1925 Bobby Walker, Barney Battles, Jock Drummond, Andy aitken, alec Ralsbeck, JackRobertson, Johnny Campbell and alec Smith were making the world talk about http://www.geocities.com/bethlehem_soccer/gl103125.html
Extractions: Although spending his second season in British Isles soccer, local fans have not yet forgotten the brilliancy of Alex Jackson when he sported the colors of Bethlehem on the Steel Workers' front line and can readily understand why critics marvel at his skill and hail him as the greatest overseas soccer find of the past several seasons. Among the publications that reach this desk, one comes from abroad, the Sports Post, paying tribute to young Jackson with the following: "There can be no doubt that Jackson's early travels broadened his ideas and his ability. Experience is the hardest taskmaster of all, so that it was no surprise that when he returned from America in 1925 that he should be snapped up by Aberdeen and that he should play for his native country in all three International matches last season his first real effort in Scottish League football. Nor is it surprising that Herbert Chapman, regarded him as a player who, at 20 years, was worth any money for a team like Huddersfield Town. The writer has never heard the exact amount Huddersfield Town paid for Jackson, but it is known that another club offered Aberdeen 4,500 pounds for him an offer which was refused. It need not, of course, be inferred that Huddersfield necessarily paid more than, or even as much as, that amount. "What is this youthful prodigy like? Well, he's tall, straight as a cane; but with the resiliency of a young willow tree; when football breezes blow his way, Jackson bends to the work that is brought for him to do. One moment he is tall, straight, subdued; the next he is a thing of grace, of action, of fire, of he's just alive with every mortal picture which shows activity. He's light, too, as a player he lacks poundage. He doesn't turn a beam at much over ten stone, and he's slender. But he is like a kitten on his toes.

Extractions: It's a hard life for creatures that live at the bottom of the Beaufort Sea off the Yukon North Slope. In some areas of the Beaufort, winter ice reaches all the way to the sea bottom. As the ice is pushed by winds, tides, and the forces of its own freezing, it scours the sea floor, wreaking havoc on the animals that live there. In other areas, the sea ice stays clear of the sea bed, but cuts bottom-dwelling organisms off from the supply of food available during open-water season. Alec Aitken wants to understand more about creatures that can survive such difficult conditions, and the processes that keep them going. Aitken, a University of Saskatchewan geographer, is part of an international research team taking part in a year-long study of Canada's arctic seas. The researchers involved in the multimillion-dollar Canadian Arctic Shelf Exchange Study (CASES) will be based aboard the Canadian icebreaker Franklin, which has been refitted as a research vessel. The 12 months of the study voyage, from September 2003 to September 2004, are broken into nine "legs" involving different kinds of research and different researchers. The research team Aitken leads will be on board for six of those legs. He and his colleagues and students will be spending their time digging up samples of the sea bed at about 20 stations situated across the Mackenzie Shelf and Amundsen Gulf.

Extractions: The Oracle Board: Thirty-Six Triplets Main by Jerome du Bois From this morning's New York Times: Controversial filmmaker Michael Moore was stabbed to death on a city street last night by a self-styled "aesthetic militant," according to a note stuck into his chest with the murder weapon, a barbecue skewer. The note went on to demand the revocation "in the name of Truthful Art" of all of Moore's awards, "especially the ones from Cannes, otherwise Quentin Tarantino is next." By morning, sixteen private jets from Hollywood dotted the airports around the city, and fifty-eight producers, actors and directors converged at the Paramount to prepare for a spontaneous outpouring of grief. Tarantino, his hotel door flanked by bodyguards wearing all black and derby hats, remained in his room, reportedly festooned with crossed bandoleros. Reached for comment, spokesperson Rob Reiner expressed outrage: "This is terrible, horrible, disgusting. He was a great man, and a brave one." And he added, "I've never heard of anything like this before."

Cole Porter by Jerome du Bois [comments are open for awhile] Popular media blogger Greg Allen of greg.org was so shocked, and so driven to righteous anger, by the murder of Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh last week, that he made a funny post about it with a really droll title: Wait, I Thought Nobody WATCHED Short Films . . . You see, because the Islamist fundamentalist asshole who shot, stabbed, and slit the throat of Mr. van Gogh and then used his knife to stick a five-page letter to the dead man's chest must have seen the 11-minute television film Submission, made with Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Get it? Because he thought nobody . . . Yeah, I'm laughing, too. Then Allen, without blinking an eye, twists the poisoned knife in the increasingly popular way: van Gogh asked for it. Seriously, what is up with these people? I can't believe anyone not related to the filmmakers actually watches a short film, much less gets mad enough to kill over one. [There was that one time when MVRDV got death threats over their short animated film, Pig City... And the guy who got them in that trouble, Pim Fortuyn, did get assassinated himself...]

Extractions: Professor W. L. Edge, mathematician, died on September 27 aged 92. He was born on November 8, 1904. William Edge was one of the last survivors of the great Cambridge school of geometry founded by H. F. Baker in the earlier part of this century. It reached its high point in the 1920s, and included P. du Val, W. V. D. Hodge, T. G. Room, J. G. Semple, J. A. Todd and H. S. M. Coxeter (who still thrives). William Leonard Edge was educated at Stockport Grammar School and Trinity College, Cambridge, from which he went to Edinburgh University in 1932. He was to remain there for the rest of his academic career, retiring in 1975. Travelling did not appeal to him, although he did attend the conference in Toronto in 1979 celebrating Coxeter's 75th birthday. He also regularly returned to Trinity, and was even persuaded to travel to the University of Sussex on two occasions. He published 91 research articles and one book, Ruled Surfaces , between 1932 and 1994. His writing style was always polished and the argument in every paper is traced with absolute clarity. Unusually among mathematicians, every work is his alone. He would perhaps have been surprised to know that his later works are referred to in other mathematical works more than his earlier ones. His early work was entirely in algebraic geometry, and especially algebraic surfaces in "ordinary" space. He devoted many papers to careful exegesis of families of quadrics, that is, surfaces of degree two. In 1953 he published his first paper in finite geometry, bringing all his experience of complex geometry to bear on the elucidation of finite spaces. Such geometries now have many applications in such areas as the theory of error-correcting codes.

Extractions: CANADIAN NORTHERN STUDIES TRUST Background The Canadian Northern Studies Trust (CNST) was established in 1982 as the scholarship arm of the Association of Canadian Universities for Northern Studies, to reflect the major thrust of the associations efforts to advance knowledge and understanding of Canadas North. The purpose of the CNST is to develop a cadre of scholars and scientists with northern experience and at the same time enhance the educational opportunities available for northern residents. For 25 years the CNST has fulfilled its mandate by offering awards for exceptional northern-based research conducted by graduate students, and by providing assistance to northern residents to obtain post-secondary education at Canadian universities and colleges. The CNST works closely with other agencies, institutions and donors concerned with education and scientific activity in the north. In this manner, Canadas North is kept at the forefront of southern academic and scientific initiatives, while northerners have the opportunity to share the resources and expertise at Canadian universities. Members of the CNST management committee are currently selected for a three year term. They are selected to represent a cross-section of disciplines and geographical locations.

Princeton ** New Biographies- Adult Collection ** Sir Alec Guinness was one of the greatest actors of the twentieth century. With a talent recognised by discerning critics from his very first appearance on the stage, he gained a world-wide reputation playing roles on the screen such as Fagin in Oliver Twist and Sidney Stratton in The Man in the White Suit. His performance as Colonel Nicholson in The Bridge on the River Kwai won him an Oscar and, in his later years, he captivated a new generation of admirers as George Smiley in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars. Guinness was a man who vigorously guarded his privacy and, despite publishing an autobiography and two volumes of his diaries, he remained an enigma to the general public and a mystery even to his family and closest friends.
