Today children start playing sports, such as soccer and T-ball, at a very early age, and with greater intensity than their parents did. Title IX of the Higher Education Act of 1965 has encouraged the growth in sports for girls and women. More people are physically active throughout their life, spawning interest in recreational sports at all ages as well as an interest in the techniques for resuming these athletic activities after injury.

The results of this work help regulating agencies better understand the performance of equipment used in their games. It provides scientific information to support playing rules designed to maintain competitive balance and player safety. The lab contracts with regulating agencies and bat and ball manufacturers to verify compliance with performance limits and evaluate new product prototypes. In addition to performing contracted work, graduate students working in the laboratory carry out various research projects that help further the understanding of sports sciences.
