Practitioners of social anthropology investigate, often through long term, intensive field studies (including participant observation methods), the social organization of a particular people: customs economic and political organization, law and conflict resolution, patterns of consumption and exchange kinship and family structure, gender relations , childrearing and socialization religion , and so on. Social anthropology also explores the role of meanings, ambiguities and contradictions of social life , patterns of sociality, violence and conflict, and the underlying logics of social behaviour . Social anthropologists are trained in the interpretation of narrative ritual and symbolic behaviour not merely as text , but with communication examined in relation to action, practice, and the historical context in which it is embedded. We have just opened an exciting new interdisciplinary postgraduate research programme in the Sociology and Anthropology of Health and Illness. We currently have 16 permanent teaching staff, 6 postdoctoral and research fellows, over 40 postgraduate research students around 30 taught postgraduate students, and about 100 Honours undergraduates, all involved in active research. The materials made available are linked to the author's simultaneously published book Teach Yourself Social Anthropology (London, Hodder and Stoughton, 2000). They describe a seven week course in social anthropology at a summer school in the Polish city of Cracow. Postcommunist society is neither exotically strange nor reassuringly familiar to the participants, who learn to apply and deepen their knowledge in a variety of activities outside the classroom. Radcliffe-Brown, was appointed in 1937. His successors have been Sir Edward Evans-Pritchard (1946-70), Maurice Freedman (1970-75), Rodney Needham (1976-90), John Davis (1990-95), and David Parkin (1996- to present). In 2006 a second Chair in Social Anthropology was established, to which Harvey Whitehouse was appointed (taking over from Professor Parkin as Head of the ISCA).
