Extractions: Slugs are mollusks, related to oysters and clams. Slugs are referred to a "naked snails," as they possess no shell. Slugs lay clusters of translucent, pearly-shaped eggs under debris or buried beneath the soil surface. They can lay between 20 to 100 eggs several times per year, taking approximately two years for slugs to reach maturity. The gray garden slug, Peroceras reticulatum , is the slug generally encountered in Illinois. It is approximately 3/4 to 1-1/2 inches long, ranging in color from pale yellow, lavender, to purple. In addition, they are covered with black or brown spots and mottling. Less commonly encountered is the great gray garden slug, Limax maximus . These slugs become lighter in color as they age. The yellowish mantle usually has three rows of black spots that continue to the end of the body. The species is found primarily on islands and along the coast, but it is becoming more common inland. The tawny garden slug seldom reaches 4 inches long. It is usually recognized by its yellow mantle, and lighter spots on a yellow body. This type is less common than the gray garden or spotted garden slugs. The approximately 100 eggs laid by male or female (slugs are hermaphroditic) gray garden slugs are about 1/8 inch in diameter. A 4 inch slug may produce eggs up to a 1/4 inch in diameter. It takes about 100 days for slug eggs to hatch at 32° to 40° F, but only 10 days in warmer weather, as in late May. Under ideal conditions with damp, warm weather, the life cycle of a slug could be as short as three months.

The semi-slugs are a sort of intermediates between snails and slugs.They posses shells,but these are too small to house the whole body. Slugs don't have a visceral mass,their organs are situated on top of the foot. Behind the head is the mantle,this has a different size and color pattern in each species,and forms an important identification point. The part behind the mantle to the tail end is the back.This can have a rounded profile(Arionidae) or have a sharp keel(Limacidae). The sides can have a foot fringe(or skirt) where they meet the sole.The color of the sides and the foot fringe is another important identification point. SENSES Like snails slugs have most of their sensory receptors concentrated around the head.Nerve knots,also named ganglia,process information gathered from the two pairs of tentacles.The lower,shorter,pair,the sensory tentacles, is used for smelling and maybe tasting.The upper,longer,pair,the optic tentacles is sensitive to light and smell.Although slugs can't see colors,they are able to distinguish light from dark. There are less than a 100 light sensitive cells present(compare to 4000 in Helix)many pigment cells surround each one.A large number of microvilli(see number 11 on the drawing) are at the upper surface.These are probably the areas sensitive to light. The mouth lobes can tell the difference between different surfaces. When a slug loses one of his tentacles it will grow back.For example with Arion ater this takes 1-2 months. From the head nerves stretch through the rest of the body.To the foot to control locomotion,and to the visceral mass.

I am studying evolutionary biology and I became interested in banana slugs because I feel that they are good organisms to study sexual conflict between hermaphroditic mating partners. My banana slugs are just so damn cute! Below I have a mating video and pictures of slug penises. All part of my PhD thesis... What is sexual conflict? The big picture is that there is often a conflict of interests between mating partners because each individual will differ in how it can maximize it's fitness (ie. how many babies it can make in its lifetime). For example, after a male and female mate, the female may want to mate again because she may benefit from gaining sperm from other males. But, from the point of view of the male that she just mated with, her remating is a very bad thing because that means that she will not fertilize all her eggs with his sperm, but with another male's sperm as well. This is an example of a conflict of interests where the female wants to remate, but the male does not want her to. This is a mating pair. Because their genital opening in near their head, they line up in the yin-yang position and stay like this for hours.

However we do have one pest that can, under certain circumstances, destroy most of our crops. No gardener needs two guesses as to what this is; it has to be the slug. The Black Slug When allotment holders were asked recently to name the crops that most frequently suffered from pest attacks, brassicas and potatoes headed the list. In both cases slugs were seen as the main pest responsible, and overall they were blamed for causing the most damage to vegetables. In response to this, slug pellets lead the field as the most used pesticides. To control any pest it is essential to know something about the beast. In this instance identification of the various types of slug is desirable, because not all of them cause problems in the garden. As explained later, overuse of slug poisons can be counter productive in that you risk killing off the predators that are helping to control your slug population. Such poisons should therefore be used, if used at all, only when and where a serious problem is seen to be developing, involving a slug species that is known to attack the crop you are growing. Once you have identified the species and can learn a little about its habits, you might well find that there are non-chemical options that are effective controls.
