Extractions: Leading the expedition was fifty-two year old Legend of Honor member Joseph Nicolas Nicollet, an eminent French astronomer and mathematician, and foremost surveyor and mapmaker of his day. Nicollet, had been the protoge of Laplace, and is recognized in the last vol. of Mecanique Celeste as an observer of comets, and for his work on the great map of France. At the time of the revolution of 1830, Nicollet was astronomer at the Bureau of Longitudes at the Royal Observatory in Paris. Financially ruined by the revolution, he came to America, where he became associated with Rudolf Hassler of the U. S. Coast Survey. In 1839, J. R. Poinsett, then Secretary of the Department of War, requested of Nicollet that he write an essay on Meteorological Observations. The essay was published by the Corps of Topographical Engineers. It is primarily a collection of questions and suggestions of topics to be studied. On pp 6-7 of the 1848 Geographical Memoir is an entirely current description on the meteorological dynamics of the western states.

Extractions: To learn more about some of the instruments that meteorologists use to measure the weather, follow this link to Weather Instruments Meteorologists and Weather Forecasters are very important because they can predict what the weather is going to be like in the future. To do this, they use very specialized equipment. Within the last 50 years, meteorologists have used weather balloons, satellites, radar, and computers to improve the accuracy of their forecasts. WEATHER BALLOONS carry an instrument called "Radio-sonde" which measures temperature, pressure, and humidity at different altitudes in the atmosphere. Special recording equipment in the balloons converts readings from these instruments into electrical impulses and transmits the impulses to earth. The balloons are tracked with radar to find wind speed and direction. Eventually the balloon bursts, and the instrument floats back to the ground by parachute. WEATHER SATELLITES send back information about storms, fronts, cloud cover, geographical features of the earth, and air and ocean temperatures.

If you would like more information or to schedule a visit, please write to meteorology@rutgers.edu Meteorology is the study of weather and climate, of the characteristics, structure, and processes of the atmosphere. Students learn how to forecast the weather and how to understand climate change. The emphasis of the Bachelor of Science degree program is on developing a broad understanding of the fundamental physical and dynamic processes governing the motions and behavior of the atmosphere, and its interactions with the underlying land and ocean surfaces. Basic courses in chemistry, physics, and mathematics are the prerequisite foundation on which the meteorology program is built. Students who wish to pursue an undergraduate meteorology degree should have a strong high school or equivalent background in mathematics and the sciences prior to enrollment. This program meets all the U.S. federal government civil service requirements for classification as a meteorologist and the American Meteorological Society recommendations for undergraduate meteorology programs.

The Department of Commerce formed the OFCM in 1964 in response to Public Law 87-843. Samuel P. Williamson is the Federal Coordinator. Activities: Operational Processing Centers (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Centers for Environmental Prediction and Office of Satellite Data Processing and Distribution, the Air Force Weather Agency, and the Navy's Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center and Naval Oceanographic Office). The OFCM recently restructured the interagency coordinating process to better match the federal agencies' perspectives, focus areas, and priorities for the 21st century and, at the same time, reduced the number of groups needed to support the infrastructure.

When the data are plotted on a weather map, we get a synoptic view of the worlds weather. Hence day-to-day analysis and forecasting of weather has come to be known as synoptic meteorology. It is the study of the movement of low pressure areas, air masses, fronts, and other weather systems like depressions and tropical cyclones. Climatology is a study of the climate of a place or region on the basis of weather records accumulated over long periods of time. The average values of meteorological parameters derived from a data base that extends over several decades are called climatological normals. Different regions of the world have different characteristic climates. However, it is now recognized that climate is not static and issues such as climate change and global warming are receiving increasing attention. This particular branch of meteorology attempts to describe the atmospheric processes through mathematical equations which together are called a numerical model. After defining the initial state of the atmosphere and ocean, the equations are solved to derive a final state, thus enabling a weather prediction to be made. Dynamic meteorology deals with a wide range of hydrodynamical equations from a global scale to small turbulent eddies. The process of solving the equations is very complicated and requires powerful computers to accomplish.
