The ECE department currently consists of eighteen faculty members and is in the process of expanding its faculty significantly with emphasis on biomedical engineering, microelectronics and nanotechnology, optical communication devices and systems, and wireless communication and networking. The departmental faculty actively participates and provides leadership to major research centers on campus such as the Sherman Fairchild Center for Solid-State Studies , the Center for Optical Technologies , Center of Excellence in Wireless Communication and Networking, the Center for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology the Materials Research Center and the Zettlemoyer Center for Surface Studies. Opportunities to pursue faculty supervised graduate and undergraduate research and project work are readily available. In fact, completion of a senior project by small teams, resulting in a final product or design, is required of all our undergraduate majors. The department awards between forty and fifty bachelors degrees in computer engineering and about twenty to thirty bachelors degrees in electrical engineering and at least a dozen graduate degrees in these fields annually. Currently the department has somewhat over three hundred undergraduate enrolled and roughly sixty full-time and thirty part-time graduate students. Current research expenditure runs at about a million dollars a year and is expanding rapidly.
