Rice Cognitive Sciences Program The Rice cognitive sciences Program provides students with a multidisciplinary study of the mind, covering research in the fields of computer science, http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~cognsci/
Extractions: Home FAQs Faculty Courses ... Contact Researchers in this interdisciplinary field seek to understand such mental phenomena as perception, thought, memory, the acquisition and use of language, learning, concept formation, and consciousness. Some investigators focus on relationships between brain structures and behavior, some work with computer simulation, and others work at more abstract philosophical levels. Extractions: Article Link ) Everyone is in denial about something; just try denying it and watch friends make a list. Yet recent studies from fields as diverse as psychology and anthropology suggest that the ability to look the other way, while potentially destructive, is also critically important to forming and nourishing close relationships. Article Link ) Confronted by the irritating problem of consciousness , some contemporary thinkers have resorted to what might seem lunacy. Did primitive mental experiences precede the evolution of brains, similar to how living cells and bodies required the existence of atoms beforehand? Or are "qualitative events" a completely brute emergent product of neural activity, without any non-biological causes whatsoever? Some skeptics respond with: Even if they did occur with matter interactions in general, how could such elemental mental states combine to form the kinds of complicated experiences we humans have? After all, when you put a bunch of people in the same room, their individual minds do not form a single collective mind. (Or do they?)

Extractions: Main Navigation Directory Search Bioacoustics Research Laboratory Bioimaging Science and Technology Cognitive Neuroscience Cognitive Science ... BioIntel Awards Cognitive Science group researchers are concerned with higher mental processes and how humans represent knowledge and process information. The research activities are focused specifically on two mental functions: learning and language. The research in learning extends from studies of the very young to fully mature adults. Studies of infants and children investigate the emergence of symbolic functioning. How and when during development do children acquire the capacity for representational thought, the ability to connect a picture, or model to the real thing? How do children come to understand the operations of basic physical laws, or the fact that the world is round and moves about the sun? How do children's early experiences with numbers and measurement affect development of basic quantitative competence? For example, the Chinese and Western systems of naming numbers differ; there is evidence that this difference affects learning the names of numbers in the two cultures. Other research is concerned with the use of memory in learning and how older children and adults use examples in learning problem-solving skills. Research in advanced knowledge acquisition is directed toward instructional strategies that allow people to master complex concepts and transfer their knowledge from formal schooling to real-world cases.

It is intended to help find papers to read, or as a reminder of the gist of a paper you've already read. The Cognitive Science Summaries project is a part of my Educational Research theme. Please contribute to this site with your own summaries. Multiple summaries of the same article are terrific. Many people have contributed to this site. Here is the template for the summaries, if you care to use it. Don't worry about converting it if you have already written the summary in another format just email me the text file and I will take care of the rest. To help you understand these summaries, it might be helpful to look at the Other online resources You can also contribute to the summaries page by assigning individuals or groups to write a summary for a class project. To study its complexities, the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology combines the experimental technologies of neurobiology, neuroscience, and psychology, with the theoretical power that comes from the fields of computational neuroscience and cognitive science. The Department was founded by Hans-Lukas Teuber in 1964 as a Department of Psychology, with the then-radical vision that the study of brain and mind are inseparable. Today, at a time of increasing specialization and fragmentation, our goal remains to understand cognition- its processes, and its mechanisms at the level of molecules, neurons, networks of neurons, and cognitive modules. We are unique among neuroscience and cognitive science departments in our breadth, and in the scope of our ambition. We span a very large range of inquiry into the brain and mind, and our work bridges many different levels of analysis including molecular, cellular, systems, computational and cognitive approaches.

Extractions: Skip site header WordNet a lexical database for the English language George A. Miller . Nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs are grouped into sets of cognitive synonyms (synsets), each expressing a distinct concept. Synsets are interlinked by means of conceptual-semantic and lexical relations. The resulting network of meaningfully related words and concepts can be navigated with the browser . WordNet is also freely and publicly available for download . WordNet's structure makes it a useful tool for computational linguistics and natural language processing Over the years, many people have contributed to the development of WordNet. Currently, the WordNet team includes the following members of the Cognitive Science Laboratory: WordNet has been supported by grants from the NSF, ARDA, DARPA, DTO, and REFLEX.
