The Bergius Process The bergius Process is a very simple process for converting brown coal completely into crude oil invented by Dr. friedrich bergius. http://pslc.ws/macrog/exp/rubber/synth/bergius.htm
Extractions: The Bergius Process The Bergius Process is a very simple process for converting brown coal completely into crude oil invented by Dr. Friedrich Bergius. The brown coal, also known as lignite, is ground into a fine powder and placed into a high pressure reactor where it is reacted with hydrogen gas at high temperature and pressure. Initially, problems with large scale production made industrial use impossible. After the development of catalysts, and with assistance from the Standard Oil (NJ) Company the process became commercially viable. Dr. Bergius received the Nobel Prize in 1931 for this contribution to industrial science. Check out the Nobel Prize site to learn more! From Frank A. Howard, Buna Rubber: The Birth of an Industry. Germany produced about 300,000 tons of motor fuel by coal-hydrogenation last year; 500.000 tons is a likely figure for this year. Last year England's Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd. completed a hydrogenation plant of 150,000 tons annual capacity. In the U. S., which produces oceans of oil, the commercial process has not got under way. Last week Dr. Bergius, bald and 52, was spotlighted in Pittsburgh at the convention of the American Chemical Society. As an example of how economic necessity may point the way to technological research, he neatly remarked that while Germany is trying to turn "waste products of industry into food, the U. S. is trying to divert food to industrial uses (example: Henry Ford compressing soybean meal into automobile parts). The German made a speech on "Problems of Industrial Pioneer Work" in which he told how under modern conditions long years and much money may be required for a new process to carve its place in a national economy.

Extractions: How Synthetic is your " Synthetic " Oil? Introduction Many consumers are not just surprised but quite often shocked to learn that the " Synthetic Oils " for which they pay premium price (3 to 9 times that of Petroleum Oil) are not only not performing any better than average Petroleum Motor Oil, but also are not " Synthetic " at all! How had this happened? SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) deleted any and all definitions of " synthetic " from all specifications relating to oils. API (American Petroleum Institute) never defined what " synthetic " is. NAD (National Advertising Division of the Council of Better Business Bureaus) ruled that " Synthetic " is a marketing term and that it is the responsibility of the Marketer (the one who labels and markets the oil) to define what it is. Back labels of Mobil 1 products for many years had following statement:

Extractions: Actually, how long have people been active in science? The answer is the same for both women and men as long as we have been human. One of the defining marks of humanity is our ability to affect and predict our environment. Science - the creation of structure for our world - technology - the use of structure in our world - and mathematics - the common language of structure - all have been part of our human progress, through every step of our path to the present. Women and men together have researched and solved each emerging need.
