INHS Homepage CENTER FOR AQUATIC ECOLOGY David Philipp , Director The aquatic resources of Illinois range from streams and ponds to impoundments to a major floodplain river (the Mississippi) and one of the Great Lakes (Michigan). The mission of the Center for Aquatic Ecology is to conduct basic and applied research on the state's aquatic ecosystems and to investigate the biology of the associated flora and fauna. The Illinois Natural History Survey has employed respected and competent aquatic researchers since its inception under the direction of Stephen A. Forbes. The present Center staff is composed of nationally and internationally recognized scientists working in concert with a talented and dedicated support staff to conduct quality research that provides information for enlightened management and conservation of aquatic resources. Public Service Center scientists disseminated their findings by making scientific presentations to a wide-ranging audience, participating in formal university education programs by advising graduate students and teaching courses, identifying aquatic organisms for the public, serving on a variety of state and federal technical committees and advisory boards, and serving professional societies and organizations as officers and members of committees. They actively presented their research findings, including 4 invited formal seminars at major research universities and 42 scientific presentations delivered at professional meetings 22 at the state/regional level, 9 at the national level, and 11 internationally.

Madtom , a trailerable 25' research vessel, is berthed 20 minutes north of the campus at Sandy Creek on Lake Ontario. The Madtom is fully equipped with winch, meter wheel, crane, GPS, marine radio, fathometer, etc. Its deep-V hull, twin 100 HP motors, and heavy gauge aluminum construction have proven it to be a reliable research platform on the Great Lakes, Finger Lakes, and on the Hudson, Niagara and St. Lawrence Rivers. In addition, the program operates a pontoon boat with complete electrofishing capability and several 16 18 runabouts with outboard motors. This active research program offers interested students opportunities for collaborative research, internships, volunteer outings and possible employment doing aquatic science.

The Center's research projects span from freshwaters to estuaries and marine waters. Current research includes cyanobacteria and their toxins in major drinking water supply reservoirs in North Carolina; long-term trends in nutrient loading to the Neuse River and Estuary and ecosystem response, related to changing land use patterns in the watershed; and the biology of harmful algae and their impacts on finfish and shellfish health.

We are mostly concernd with evolutionary and ecological diversity dynamics. We wish to understand variation between evolutionary lineages in their rates and mechanisms of evolutionary diversification, in their current diversity, and in the rates of loss of diversity. This includes the origins, maintenance and loss of adaptive divergence between populations, of polymorphisms within populations, and of new species and macroevolutionary diversity. Ultimately, we like to understand how origin, maintenance and loss of biodiversity are affected by environmental variation, heterogeneity and change. To this end we apply methods from experimental and quantitative ecology, behaviour, morphology, molecular population genetics and phylogenetics. Our main model systems are adaptive radiations of fish, such as the cichlid fish in the great lakes of Africa, the coregonids (whitefish) in the prealpine lake system, and the different ecotypes and geographical varieties of trouts, char and stickleback. We also study applied fish ecology in the context of management and revitalisation of running waters, effects of hydropower management schemes on habitat connectivity and population dynamics, impacts of hormon-active substances at population level, and methodology for assessing and monitoring river quality.

Today, the Aquatic Ecology Laboratory contains eight 22-m artificial streams that can used as a flow-through or recycling system. A unique capability of these streams is their use with radiotracers, such as P-32, to investigate the transport of nutrients through various compartments of a simple ecosystem (e.g., water, algae, snails). Past radiotracer experiments have also included studies of the effectiveness of biofilms in the uptake of selected heavy metals. In addition to the streams, numerous fiberglas tanks, ranging from circular 750-L holding tanks to 1.2-m long X 55-cm wide X 30-cm deep Living Streams R are used for experimental purposes. The experiments can be conducted using either spring water or dechlorinated process water at varying flow rates and temperatures. Current experiments include tests of the effects of turbulence on behavioral responses of fish and their susceptibility to increased rates of predation. Other features of the Aquatic Ecology Laboratory include the Toxicology Laboratory, which is now dedicated to testing the toxicity of the effluents discharged from local DOE facilities and of the streams receiving those effluents.
