Mawata University of Tennessee at Chattanooga For many teachers, instruction using web pages conjures up the image of a book in the vertical plane and no pedagogical advantage. With the advent of Java applets this is no longer the case. This paper aims to demonstrate that applets are very powerful as a medium of instruction. Examples of several ways in which applets can improve mathematics instruction will be given. The reader, however, should not be left with the impression that these applets are all that can be done. The hope is that the reader will think of instances where an applet would be appropriate in his or her teaching. The level of the material to be learned can be anywhere from elementary school to tertiary level. We start with applets used to generate examples and instances of the objects under discussion. The applet below is inserted in a web page just after acute and obtuse angles have been defined. Rather than one or two pictures of acute and obtuse angles the terminal side sweeps through angles from to 180 degrees. You will find that even people who are quite familiar with acute and obtuse angles will patiently watch the applet as the angles change. What this applet is doing is holding the students attention and reinforcing the definition. Many students watch carefully to see if at 90 degrees it does say right angle. It is desirable to have a start/stop button so that students can stop the animation when they are done with it. This way the applet does not become a distraction.

Extractions: in the Research in Collegiate Mathematics Education Volumes The papers published in these volumes will serve both pure and applied purposes, contributing to the field of research in undergraduate mathematics education and informing the direct improvement of undergraduate mathematics instruction. The dual purposes imply dual but overlapping audiences and articles will vary in their relationship to these purposes. The best papers, however, will interest both audiences and serve both purposes. We invite papers reporting on research that addresses any and all aspects of undergraduate mathematics education. Research may focus on learning within particular mathematical domains. It may be concerned with more general cognitive processes such as problem solving, skill acquisition, conceptual development, mathematical creativity, cognitive styles, etc. Research reports may deal with issues associated with variations in teaching methods, classroom or laboratory contexts, or discourse patterns. More broadly, research may be concerned with institutional arrangements intended to support learning and teaching, e.g. curriculum design, assessment practices, or strategies for faculty development. We expect and encourage a broad spectrum of research methods ranging from traditional statistically-oriented studies of populations, or even surveys, to close studies of individuals, both short and long term. Empirical studies may well be supplemented by historical, ethnographic, or theoretical analyses focusing directly on the educational matter at hand. Theoretical analyses may illuminate or otherwise organize empirically based work by the author or that of others, or perhaps give specific direction to future work. In all cases, we expect that published work will acknowledge and build upon that of othersnot necessarily to agree with or accept others work, but to take that work into account as part of the process of building the integrated body of reliable knowledge, perspective and method that constitutes the field of research in undergraduate mathematics education.

May 4, 2005 For almost two decades, mathematics education in K-12 classrooms has been driven by unsupported pedagogical theories constructed in our schools of education and propagated by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). Their curricular and pedagogical "vision" for mathematics education reform, articulated in the two NCTM standards documents (1989 and 2000), has dominated local, state and federal education decision-making and policies, as well as public discussions, and press coverage. But many parents, mathematics experts, and K-12 teachers of mathematics do not share this vision. A well-informed group of education stakeholders rejects the NCTM doctrine and model for mathematics reform. The expertise and viewpoints of this diverse group, comprised of mathematicians and scientists, K-12 teachers of mathematics, educational researchers, and concerned parents across our nation has been regularly eclipsed and marginalized by the dominant voice of mathematics educators in our schools of education and of NCTM officials. This constituency's expertise is often entirely absent from the decision-making process. We are members of that constituency, and are part of an informal bipartisan grassroots coalition of advocates for authentic reforms in mathematics education.
