    Extractions: The purpose of this book is to provide a traditional treatment of elementary ordinary differential equations while introducing the computer-assisted methods that are now available with Mathematica Mathematica over other systems of computer algebra because of its combination of easy access and computational power, as evidenced through symbolic, numerical, and graphical output. In order to make this work totally self-contained, we have developed the fundamentals of differential equations from the very beginning. This includes the solution methods for the traditional classes of solvable equations (first-order linear, second-order constant-coefficients, linear systems, Laplace transforms, power series solutions and so forth) as well as a presentation of the basic theory of existence/uniqueness and the traditional numerical methods for first-order equations. In the process some new mathematical points have been developed, to be noted below. It is our firm belief that a solid mastery of the subject of differential equations can only be achieved through a strong traditional course. This is enhanced by the graphical capabilities of Mathematica , which have allowed the incorporation of many more graphs than are normally available in books at this level.

    Extractions: Home Papers Links Search William Golz, Ph.D. Expertise My interests focus on developing better descriptions of the movement and transformation of soluble contaminants in environmental systems. To improve our ability to understand and mitigate environmental pollution, we must be able to better describe why and when contaminants such as mercury travel from one material into another, as from a sediment into a river, and to quantify the mass of a contaminant which will be transformed from one species into another, such as when inorganic mercury is transformed into its more bioavailable methylated form. The only method capable of providing a theory based description of contaminant behavior over a variety of temporal and spatial scales is a mass-transfer model, which yields a system of differential equations. My research specialty is formulating these dynamic systems so that they comply with physicochenical theory in such a way that the models actually teach us something about the underlying physical behavior. Combining techniques from conservation law and functional analysis has allowed me to develop dynamic models which more accurately describe such things as biological nitrification and denitrification in biofilters and constructed wetlands, the biogeochemical cycling of nutrients and other contaminants in coastal marshes, and the transport and transformation of soluble carbon and nitrogen in surface water.

We start with some simple examples of explicitly solvable equations. Then we prove the fundamental results concerning the initial value problem: existence, uniqueness, extensibility, dependence on initial conditions. Furthermore we consider linear equations, the Floquet theorem, and the autonomous linear flow. Then we establish the Frobenius method for linear equations in the complex domain and investigates Sturm-Liouville type boundary value problems including oscillation theory. Next we introduce the concept of a dynamical system and discuss stability including the stable manifold and the Hartman-Grobman theorem for both continuous and discrete systems. We prove the Poincare-Bendixson theorem and investigate several examples of planar systems from classical mechanics, ecology, and electrical engineering. Moreover, attractors, Hamiltonian systems, the KAM theorem, and periodic solutions are discussed as well. Finally, there is an introduction to chaos. Beginning with the basics for iterated interval maps and ending with the Smale-Birkhoff theorem and the Melnikov method for homoclinic orbits.

    Extractions: Over a period of several years I wrote and rewrote a set of Maple .mws files for use by my students in an introductory class in Ordinary Differential Equations. The files consist of a series of interactive readings on using Maple to learn a particular DE topic. Associated with each reading file is another file of exercises on the topic. If you examine these files, you will see that they amount to rather more than the usual set of laboratory exercises such as are available in several commercial workbooks. My intent in these lessons is to use Maple to teach differential equations techniques, rather than to teach about using Maple. On the other hand, the persistent student who works through these lessons will surely become an expert at using Maple. To obtain a copy of the shareware click on Maple files for DE Load this file into the directory you want to use and run de.exe. It will explode into about 80 files. The files are in DOS format; however, they can easily be imported into a Macintosh machine (and probably others). You will probably need to use a DOS machine to run de.exe.
