Extractions: Nancy R. Sottos Advanced Chemical Systems Biomolecules, mesoscopic semiconductor-based systems, and macromolecular assemblies are studied with emphasis on future electronic or optoelectronic applications. Another goal is to develop powerful tools for serving this (and other) research within the Beckman Institute. For example, one of the world's most advanced scanning tunneling microscopy systems, and facilities for scanning force microscopy and near-field scanning optical microscopy, enable researchers to observe and even create new forms of nanostructures. Efforts in self-organizing syntheses run parallel to solid-state electronics nanostructure research and seek to understand scientific principles relating to the mechanisms for assembly and function of mesoscale inorganic, organic, and biological molecules. Research is underway in the self-assembly of organic molecules into nanostructures and the use of supramolecular assemblies as templates for nanostructured semiconductors. Researchers are also investigating possibilities to merge nanolithographic and chemical synthetic techniques in the hope of controlling the formation of structured materials from atomic to chip size. Theoretical research on nanostructures relies on large computational resources and has fostered the development of extensive computational tools and software used for experiments, visualization, and CPU-intensive numerical operations. Also under development is a multiscale approach to nanostructure simulation, using classical differential equations that apply to the large scale of the chip size, and semiclassical particle Monte Carlo methods for submicrometer sizes. For mesoscopic systems, the group develops efficient algorithms to solve the Schrodinger equation and explores quantum contributions to nanostructure resistence and capacitance. Attempts are being made to expand the scope of the simulation toward biological systems. Additionally, applicability of computer-aided design tools to simulate biological ion channels has recently been demonstrated.

The goal of theoretical computer science is to understand the underlying principles of information processing, principles that are invariant with respect to technological change. Some of the areas we are investigating are described below. Analysis of Algorithms An algorithm with exponential asymptotic running time is of limited practical value regardless of future advances in hardware technology. Members of the faculty are searching for efficient, practical algorithms to solve problems in coding, scheduling, logic, computational geometry, information retrieval, and programming-language optimization. We are also studying the approximation properties of NP optimization problems and developing methods for establishing both positive and negative approximation results for such problems. Parallel Computation Recent advances in VLSI have made it possible to use multiple processors to tackle a single problem. Efficient algorithms for a parallel system have characteristics far different from traditional sequential algorithms. Furthermore, some problems appear to be inherently sequential, in the sense that no parallel algorithm can significantly reduce the computation time needed to solve them. Our research has concentrated on distinguishing inherently sequential problems from those that can be solved quickly with parallel algorithms and on designing efficient parallel algorithms, particularly for scheduling and graph problems.

I'm also a PhD student at the Department of Swedish at Göteborg University as well as enrolled in the Graduate School of Language Technology ( GSLT ). Here's some info on the courses I've taken Before joining SICS for my master's thesis in april 1997, I was a student at the educational programme in language engineering at Uppsala university. I became a full-time member of HUMLE in february 1998, and have since then worked with the issue of reusing language resources, as well as with designing and developing an open architecture for information refinement. I defended my licentiate of philosophy thesis entitled Requirements and Design Considerations for an Open and General Architecture for Information Refinement on March 13, 2002, in Uppsala.
