Extractions: A PhD degree in Biostatistics requires a program of courses selected from biostatistics, statistics, and at least one other subject area (such as biology, environmental health, epidemiology), a qualifying examination and preparation of a dissertation. Courses cover traditional topics as well as recent advances in biostatistics and in statistics. Those completing the PhD will have acquired a deep knowledge and understanding of these subject areas. Since graduates with doctorates often assume academic careers in research and teaching, a high degree of mastery in research design, theory, methodology and execution is expected as well as the ability to communicate and present research findings and area of expertise in a clear, understandable manner. The PhD degree program requires 4-6 semesters of course work followed by 2-4 semesters to complete examinations and prepare a dissertation (a minimum of four semesters of registration is required). Since there are no unit or course requirements for the PhD, a program of courses appropriate to a student's background and interests may be developed. All students in the PhD program hold a master's degree in Biostatistics or a related field and those applying for PhD study who do not already hold a masters degree are admitted initially for the Biostatistics MA. This practice does not prolong the time to the doctorate since the first two years of both the MA and PhD programs for students coming from the baccalaureate are identical.

The mission of the Core is to foster research productivity and quality by helping faculty design sound research projects, obtain independent funding, and analyze data correctly. Grant development services such as design and statistical consultation, power analysis, and analyses of pilot data are available to Semel Institute faculty without charge. Consulting and data analysis services are free for unfunded Semel Institute students, residents and new faculty members. SIStat offers ongoing fee-based services to extramurally funded projects. Continuing Core services to funded projects and programs are negotiated on a case by case basis. The Core provides investigators from fully-affiliated projects and their statistical staff access to SIStat consultation, data analysis and programming services, up to one year post-funding support for final, "clean-up" data analyses, and permanent archiving of data. From time to time, faculty of the Core also provides education in statistics and research methods to interested faculty, staff and students.

Biostatisticians play a key and sometimes leading role in the development of new treatment methodologies for human ailments. This statement also holds true for the understanding of complex biological and environmental systems. The mission of the joint Graduate Program in Biostatistics is to develop the technical, practical and leadership expertise of students in this important area of Biostatistics, thereby enabling students to contribute significantly to the improvement of human health throughout the world. The graduate program in biostatistics is offered jointly through the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Department of Biostatistics and William Marsh Rice University Department of Statistics . The primary degree program in this collaborative effort is the doctoral program, however, successful students will receive a Master of Statistics from Rice University in their second year of study. We are currently designing a mechanism by which students can recieve their degree from MD Anderson, so that eventually doctoral degrees may be granted by either institution; students designate their institution of choice in their second year of study. Although this joint program begins in the year 2000, strong collaborations have existed between the two respective departments for as much as twenty-five years in the previous century. This joint degree program solidifies this collaborative spirit and provides students with a unique opportunity for exposure to a multitude of cutting edge research areas within the general umbrella of Biostatistics. Students will also gain valuable clinical experience in this innovative program.
