If you wish to pursue Astronomy or Astrophysics as a career you are advised to complete a major in Physics in a Bachelor of Science programme The Astrophysics stream in the Physics major allows you to develop specific expertise in Astrophysics whilst also gaining a breadth of understanding of physics which also leaves open other options for employment. If your interest is simply in having a broad understanding of our physical universe, then you should consider the two first year astronomy units that are available to students as part of many degrees. These units will take you from the birth of the universe to the black holes that are the invisible tombstones of dead stars. They will take you from the fiery birth of our solar system to the emergence of life and to the final fiery death of our planet. In Semester 1 you can enrol in the unit Our Universe . In this unit you will study numbers, particles, geometry and space; the origin of the universe; the era of galaxy formation; stars and the synthesis of the elements; and future of the universe. The course includes lectures, group projects, and a field trip to the Southern Cross Cosmos Centre at Gingin.

Until the mid-1960's, Yerkes Observatory housed all of the Department's activities (including managing the operations for McDonald Observatory in Texas from 1932-1962). Today the 77-acre, park-like site in southeast Wisconsin provides laboratory space and access to telescopes for research and instruction in ways that complement other facilities available to the Department. A substantial fraction of the University's library holdings in astronomy are housed at Yerkes. Information on visiting Yerkes Observatory Information on telescopes at Yerkes Who was Charles T. Yerkes? Who was George Ellery Hale? The observatory was bankrolled in 1897 by Charles Tyson Yerkes, a Chicago transportation tycoon. The plan itself was masterminded by George Ellery Hale. The showpiece of the observatory was then, and still is, the 40-in refractor, in 1897 the world's largest telescope and even today the largest refracting telescope. Hale subsequently built still other "world's largest" (reflecting) telescopes in southern California.
