Extractions: University of Wisconsin Introduction Psychology of women has come a long way from Helene Deutsch's (1944) psychoanalytic writing and the century-long tradition of gender differences research in psychology. Today it has a vibrant foundation of three decades of contemporary research and a promising future built on this foundation, yet with many questions unanswered. Psychology of women today interweaves three strands: (a) psychological research focused specifically on women, their psychological functioning, and women-associated issues such as rape; (b) the psychology of gender, incorporating traditional research on gender differences but expanding beyond that to examine gender as a stimulus variable; and (c) feminist psychology, rooted in feminist theory and an articulated set of values that emphasizes equality of opportunity for women. We incorporate all three of these strands in our review. Here we will consider four major areas that represent the current status of the psychology of women and, we believe, will chart the future of psychology of women: theories in the psychology of women; the intersection of gender with race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, and disability; research methods in the psychology of women; and applications of research on the psychology of women in the areas of public policy, forensic practice, and the practice of psychotherapy and counseling.

Extractions: Psychological Development Beyond Sex and Gender Realignment Nearly all the emphasis of gender and sex realignment treatment, in the past, has been placed upon the physical changing process. This is often seen by many professionals and patients as reaching its ultimate conclusion with genital surgery. For others, however, post-transition may not include genital surgery but a point at which they have reached a certain partial physical transformation and social change that is comfortable for them. Any psychological or psychiatric interviews that may have been carried out during this process are often seen by many professionals and patients as test procedures which the patient will either pass or fail. If the patient passes the test mentality of the interview then the clinician may recommend the patient to undergo the physical changes they seek through hormone therapy and surgery. A great number of patients feel they are in danger of not passing such interviews and therefore may be hostile to the clinicians and withhold information, edit the truth and even tell a complete lie. Some of the responsibility for this must be with the clinicians involved, because in the first part of the clinician and patient contract there should be an agreement with the patient that they can be safe in telling the clinician absolutely anything. However, because patients are in a high state of anxiety when they arrive, apprehensive, and afraid of the test mentality patients themselves often seek to tell the clinicians what they think they want to hear.

Extractions: In the normal course of events in medicine of any kind the doctor listens carefully to their patients, takes the information that the patient is giving, and adds to it the doctor's estimation of events. This gives rise to the classic phrase of in IN MY PROFESSIONAL OPINION. Normally, a well-trained and empathetic practitioner would then check back with the patient to see if the patient is happy with the diagnosis. If the patient is not, then there is a need for the practitioner to re-examine the facts. In the case of someone who may be considered to be not in full possession of their faculties or in good mental health there is a need for the doctor to guide the patient towards the correct course of treatment. For the most part, a doctor who has little or no experience in dealing with people who have sex dysmorphobia (an unhappiness with the physical sexual constituents of the body), gender issues or varying sexualities, needs to be guided by expert opinion. Here the patient should have the right to choose the qualified experts that carry out the kind of examinations or assessments that may be needed to support a diagnosis. However, we need to consider that clinicians of any sort come from profuse kinds of backgrounds. Some may have religious convictions, be members of cults, or have certain narrow-minded social constructs. In other words, proportionally, there are just as many rednecks in medicine, psychiatry, psychology and psychotherapy as there are anywhere else.
