Extractions: My main research interests cover the various aspects of visual cognition, including visual attention, visual imagery, and object recognition. Much of my current research is designed to answer basic questions about when and why visual attention is necessary: How much can the visual system process at once, and what strategies are available to it to make the most of its processing resources? Some of my other experiments have probed the nature of mental representations used in visual imagery and how these representations are also used in visual perception tasks. I am constructing computationl models of visual attention and object recognition to try to explain the results from my experiments and the many other experiments on attention. I am also interested in how perceptual filling-in occurs and why it is necessary. I am a member of the cognitive group in the Psychology Department at the University of Massachusetts Amherst . Until recently I was in the Centre for Visual Cognition at the University of Southampton I currently teach undergraduate classes in Cognitive Psychology , Cognitive Neuroscience, and Consciousness , and I co-teach a graduate class on Cognition and Development.

The program also offers a unique opportunity to study cognitive aspects of developmental disability. The program places greatest emphasis on the development of basic research skills. However, it also stresses the development of skills in applied research and in college teaching. Graduates of the program typically pursue research and teaching careers in academic and applied settings; 100% of our graduates are employed in these settings. The program typically has 15-20 active students on campus. Applicants come from a wide range of backgrounds, and vary widely in skills and interests. These are development with the extremes of nature (all behavior is function of the nature or physiological and genetic makeup of the individuals involved) and nurture (all behavior is a function of the nurturing or learning the individuals have done in their lives), action with the extremes of mechanistic organismic change with the extremes of being either continuous (changes occur gradually over time, and they are quantitatively different - that is, the important differences are those of number, rather than kind) or discrete (changes may be dramatic; "shazam" moments are possible (e.g., insight); so, differences may be qualitative, such that there is not just more or less of something happening, but rather what's happening is different from what happened before). A often quoted evaluation on psychology's development is Herman Ebbinghaus's comment that "psychology has a long past, but only a short history." This statement reflects the fact that psychological ideas have been considered for millenia, but the field of psychology has existed for less than 150 years. Wilhelm Wundt established the first psychological laboratory in 1879 in Leipzig, Germany. He was interested in studying conscious experience.

A primary focus of this approach is on memory (the storage and retrieval of information), a subject that has been of interest for thousands of years . The most widely accepted theory is labeled the "stage theory," based on the work of Atkinson and Shriffin (1968). The focus of this model is on how information is stored in memory ; the model proposes that information is processed and stored in 3 stages. In this theory, information is thought to be processed in a serial, discontinuous manner as it moves from one stage to the next. This theory is discussed in more detail below.
