Lost In Brooklyn Studio, Inc. make up Newport s adhoc ensembles this season, including Cuban-Americanpianist juana zayas, Azerbaijani soprano sisters Fidan and Khuraman Kasimova, http://www.lostinbrooklyn.com/work/writing/amcwriting08.html
Extractions: "They tried to do outdoor opera and it just didn't work," says Malkovitch's son and Newport Marketing Director Mark Malkovitch IV. "A soprano lost her voice and a cello literally fell apart." Thoughts turned to presenting other forms of music in an alternate venue, namely indoors. Newport's spate of stunning turn-of-the-century mansions, once private homes of Vanderbilts and Astors, were in the process of being opened to the public through The Preservation Society of Newport. It also set a course on quite a different latitude than the one it's currently navigating. "When the Newport Music Festival was first founded, it made its mark by doing unknown American music. [Music critic] Harold Schoenberg caught on to it and he really put Newport on the map," continues son Malkovitch. "The festival's thrust originally was purely American music, but that changed when Dad took over."

After attaining great success domestically, the merengue was spread abroad in the early 1930s by means of radio broadcasts and recorded music. The first target areas were Puerto Rico, Cura§ao, Aruba and Venezuela. After conquering those markets, the rhythm's popularity spread throughout the test of the world. By the end of the 1990s, the merengue was monopolizing airplay in most Hispanic Caribbean radio stations and was the music of choice at many dance halls. What is it that makes the merengue so addictive? Is it its name that makes us think of the meringue, the delightful pie and cake topping? Perhaps we are bewitched by its fiery rhythm. A brief look into the genre's history may yield some answers.
