Extractions: Among composers, Rachmaninov looms large. While it seldom transpires that one gains equal distinction as a composer, and a pianist, yet this may be said of Rachmaninov. In the course of the next hundred years or so the excellence of his piano playing will no doubt have become mythical, but the message of his musical compositions for the orchestra, for the voice and for the piano will still remain as cherished treasures of mankind. One fine morning not long ago, I found myself, by appointment, in the spacious studio of Rachmaninov overlooking the Hudson. In this quiet and contemplative room where the master did much of his composing, we talked of many things. In the course of our conversation I asked the master musician from Moscow how he first gained recognition as a composer, for this is one of the most difficult things a young composer has to contend with. Yamaha has been a major sponsor of the Newport Music Festival since 1987. I can't imagine doing this festival without them," Malkovich admits. "Yamaha has been so helpful. The pianos always arrive on time, properly tuned, and with 64 concerts spread over 17 days, that's extremely important to us. Logistically, it was flawless, and much of that was due to the cooperation of Yamaha." John Bayless at The Breakers The Newport Music Festival, long synonymous with outstanding classical performances in a Rhode Island community renowned for seaside elegance, garnered yet another accolade last February. For the second consecutive year, it was chosen by Cadogan Press as one of "America's Elite 1000 - The Ultimate List," placing Newport in company with just 19 other national events including the Academy Awards, the U.S. Open Tennis Tournament, and The Metropolitan Opera.

Naxos) ****: Having been unfamiliar with the playing of Cuban virtuoso Juana Zayas, I had no prejudices when I auditioned yet another traversal of Schubert's last sonata (1828) and his popular 1827 set of impromptus. Both facile and intimate, these are masterful renditions that seem tailor-made for the salon experience, those contemporary Schubertiads that persist among music lovers. Zayas pays particular attention to the number of Schubert's pianissimo indications to a remarkable degree, and she can speed up in gradations of fluid tempo without increasing dynamic pressure. Those raised on the heaven-storming renditions a la Richter will find in Zayas more of Schnabel's tender spirit. In fact, I cannot recall hearing such an Apollinian approach, especially to the long, singing figures in the last movement, since I heard Lorin Hollander play this great work at SUNY Binghamton back in 1971. The Impromptus balance the lyrical elements and the sense of an evolving form, an improvised engagement between player and instrument, this a Hamburg Steinway captured in 2002. Piano sound reproduction is quite strong, with none of the obtrusive ping I often find in piano recordings. Good midrange, quite poignant in the 'cello' melody of the A-flat Impromptu. The C Minor has an especial lilt that may sell the disc by itself. While I am not going to abandon my Artur Schnabel, Eduard Erdmann, or Edwin Fischer versions of these works, I am going to recommend Zayas as a sensitive, conscientious artist of first rank.

Extractions: Latest News Back to alumni profiles Three More Gradutates Ordained Three graduates were ordained as priests on June 30: Fr. Joseph O'Hara, Fr. Donald Bauer, and Fr. Robert Fromageot. Frs. O'Hara and Bauer were ordained in the Diocese of La Crosse, Wisconsin, while Fr. Fromageot was ordained a member of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter. Frs. O'Hara and Bauer bear remarkably similar stories: both were Wisconsin natives, both were engineering school graduates, both were start-over freshmen at Thomas Aquinas College, both tested their vocations in a religious order, both were seminarians under Bishop Raymond Burke, and both are associate pastors in central rural Wisconsin. And yet, even then, and even though they graduated from Thomas Aquinas College on the same day, and were ordained as priests nine years later on the same day, their stories still are unique. Fr. Classical Net Review - Chopin - Préludes Like Jorge Bolet, juana zayas was born in Cuba and is a thrilling exponent of She is a strong pianist, and her Chopin is characterized by big gestures, http://www.classical.net/music/recs/reviews/m/m&a01006a.html
Extractions: Why isn't she better known? As a child, she studied with her mother, and then in Havana's Peyrellade Conservatory. At 17, she enrolled at the National Conservatory of Music in Paris where she continued to excel. It was in Paris that she met her husband, an accomplished flutist and a chemistry student. Zayas won an international piano competition in Geneva, got married, had three sons, and eventually ended up in America where she studied with David Bar-Illan, among others. Her New York City debut took place in 1977 in Alice Tully Hall. New York Times What is her playing like? She is a strong pianist, and her Chopin is characterized by big gestures, although never to the point of exaggeration. The forward movement of the music is emphasized, even in a more restful piece such as the Andante spianato , which also displays her beautifully singing tone. Her tempos tend to be fast, not rushed, and her use of the pedal is sensitive. In short, she has no Achilles's heel as far as technique is concerned, and her interpretations are passionate, yet not ruled by passion. On this disc, she and the Steinway she plays have been given excellent sound by engineers Tom Lazarus and Virginia Read of Classic Sound. Raymond Tuttle Search Reviews Back to the Review Index

This was one of the big religion stories last week, so we're justified in coming back to it as new comments pop up. Further, it gives the Catholic readership of this blog some context. Religious life in the United States doesn't exist in a vacuum, obviously. Religious expression and practice is influenced by the culture, pop and otherwise. In some areas of the country, Catholics are bleeding members to these kind of full-service ministries. Catholics read Osteen, Warren and Joyce Meyers, I would guess in greater numbers than they do Catholic authors.
