She lavishes on all 24 pieces a quite fabulous amalgam of lyricism, wit, drama and sheer pianistic craft, full of subtle and imaginative detail, lustrous tone and impeccable technique. Moreover, she conveys a warm-hearted exuberance as she sweeps through the set, setting forth one Etude after another in ideal fashion, never allowing interest to sag. This is piano playing, and more importantly, Chopin playing, on the highest level." International Piano Quarterly : Summer 1999: Donald Manildi "Style, sensitivity, a big technique and an aristocratic flair for the mixture of romanticism and classicism embedded in the music; an extraordinary pianist with a fertile mind and a personal kind of romanticism that can drive Chopin fans mad with ecstasy." Harold C. Schonberg in The New York Times "Why is it that record collectors, however experienced, can still allow landmark recordings to go unheard? She has all the technique necessary, but she is not tempted to vulgar displays of ego. Her performance, for lack of any finer-tuned term, must be called symphonic, a genuine symphonic Chopin of the kind that Petri or Busoni might have supplied. In fact, the comparison that springs to mind most frequently is that Zayas plays Chopin with the same commanding sweep that Petri invested in the music of Liszt. Higher praise is hard to imagine. A fellow collector tells me that these etudes have been recorded some 83 times. All things considered, however, there is no finer version than this one. Music & Arts deserves our gratitude."

Extractions: Juana Zayas (piano), Mozart Rondo in A minor, K. 511; Prokofieff: Visions fugitives, op. 22; Chopin: Four Ballades opp. 23, 38, 47, and 52. Unitarian Society of Ridgewood Ms. Zayas obviously wanted to create a link to Chopin and made as much as she could of the similarities. Her secure technique, never challenged in Mozart, produced an appropriately romantic ethos. Other aspects of pianism which were to serve her well in Chopin first surfaced in the Prokofiev performance: her deft way with third hand effect, the wide range of her pianistic colors and touches, her flawlessly dazzling virtuosity in the mad swaths of keyboard covering technical passages. The grotesquerie found only in Prokofiev during this recital revealed her ability to fall in line with his wit. The artist was clearly drained at the end of such a recital. But she graciously provided three encores: some Bach/ Busoni and a Scarlatti sonata bon-bon.

Extractions: Private studies with Sergei Babayn, Juana Zayas. Biography: In performance, Angela Jia Kim fills the hall with her exuberance and commitment. She believes music must have both colors, emotion, and motion to touch the audience. Accordingly, critics have praised her presence on stage as "electrifying" (Waterloo Courier) and as "a powerhouse" (Le Progres, France). She is a devotee of musician and thinker Emile Jacques-Dalcroze, whose almost-lost philosophy advocates that we best understand music when we feel its movements inside us. A native of Ames, Iowa, Angela Jia Kim's first musical experiences came at the age of four, studying piano with her mother, Hannah Myung Kim. By age five, she was already winning awards, performed her first recital, and had begun her violin studies. At eight, she was invited to perform Mozart at an international festival at Chicago's Auditorium Theatre. Her teachers include Marc Durand, Lee Kum Sing, Barry Snyder, and Chiu-Ling Lin. She has also received intensive coaching from master pianist Sergei Babayan. An Eastman School of Music graduate, Angela Jia Kim currently resides in New York City and in her free time, she indulges in her passion for yoga, meditation, baking, and learning foreign languages.

Extractions: PHILIP GLASS - METAMORPHOSIS KHA 005 BACH - GOLDBERG VARIATIONS CLAVES 50-2407 J S Bachs Goldberg Variations is the last of a series of keyboard music works that the composer published under the title of Clavierübung . Many people consider this the most serious and challenging composition that has ever been written for harpsichord. Based on a single bass theme, the variations prove Bachs profound understanding of many musical styles as well as his exceptional performing technique. This largest of all clavier pieces encapsulates the whole history of Baroque variation, as Beethovens Diabelli Variations later did for the Classical period. It requires a performer capable of virtuoso techniques and this outstanding recording the work is by the brilliant young Swiss pianist Cédric Pescia, gold medallist of the 2002 Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition held in Salt Lake City. His performances during the competition also earned him a $30,000 prize, the peer jury prize, and worldwide concert and recital opportunities. As well as appearing at many leading music festivals he is a soloist with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, the Utah Symphony, the Festival Strings of Lucerne, and the Sinfonie Orchester Berlin.
