And the article pointed out it was not to revive by-gone days but purely to learn the dance. Lawrence has had dancing teachers as far back as the late 1800's. One such class was conducted by Georgia Brown in one of the rooms of the Commercial Club. The club rooms were on the third floor of the old First National Bank building on the northeast corner of 8th and Massachusetts. The bank's name then was the Merchants National Bank. The Commercial Club was made up of local Lawrence merchants and citizens in other professions. Mrs. John Bell, mother of the late Bonnie Bell Houston, played the piano for the dance students. Georgia Brown not only taught dancing, but she put on local plays as well. Jean Piatt, who became Mrs. Arthur Henley, taught University men and women after we had mastered the art and were going to dances. Someone recalled those classes were held in Pythian Hall. A much more enjoyable dancing class followed Professor Skaar. Alice Guenther (Mrs. Harold Bagby) and Nelli-May Schall started a class at IOOF Hall. They were young and still in school, so discipline was slack. These young teachers seemed to go in for costume dances for the class on certain occasions. On Washington's birthday, the girls dressed up as Martha and on Valentine's Day, they made up as valentines, There were other dance teachers through the years that followed. Bernice Ackerman (Lopez) taught ballet, as did Helen Topping. Jane Breidenthal taught tap dancing in Eagles Hall. A group of boys and girls of Junior High age met on Saturday mornings at Holloway Hall above the grocery store at 19th and Massachusetts, Pinckney School offered ballet after school for a small sum. This was in the 30's. Square dancing was a popular dance with University High School boys and girls.

Fittingly, John Philip Sousa was born on November 6, 1854 at 636 G Street, SE, Washington, D.C., near the Marine Barracks where his father, Antonio, played trombone in the U.S. Marine Band. John Philip was the third of 10 children of John Antonio Sousa (born in Spain of Portuguese parents) and Maria Elisabeth Trinkhaus (born in Bavaria). Young John Philip grew up surrounded by military band music, and when he was just six, he began studying voice, violin, piano, flute, cornet, baritone, trombone and alto horn. By all accounts, John Philip was an adventure-loving boy, and when at the age of 13 he tried to run away to join a circus band, his father instead enlisted him in the Marine Band as a band apprentice. Except for a period of six months, Sousa remained in the band until he was 20 years old. In addition to his musical training in the Marine Band, he studied music theory and composition with George Felix Benkert, a noted Washington orchestra leader and teacher. Whether major television networks, or small independent radio shows, they seek me out for the black and feminist "take" on the issue. After I have my say, I am never called back, never invited to do the television shows or the radio spots. I suspect they call, confident that when we talk they will hear the hardcore "feminist" trash of gangsta rap. When they encounter instead the hardcore feminist critique of white supremacist capitalist patriarchy, they lose interest. To white dominated mass media, the controversy over gangsta rap makes great spectacle. Besides the exploitation of these issues to attract audiences, a central motivation for highlighting gangsta rap continues to be the sensationalist drama of demonizing black youth culture in general and the contributions of young black men in particular. It is a contemporary remake of "Birth of a Nation" only this time we are encouraged to believe it is not just vulnerable white womanhood that risks destruction by black hands but everyone. When I counter this demonization of black males by insisting that gangsta rap does not appear in a cultural vacuum, but, rather, is expressive of the cultural crossing, mixings, and engagement of black youth culture with the values, attitudes, and concerns of the white majority, some folks stop listening.

Finally in 1934 he organized his own band for a stay at the Empress Rooms in London, England. During 1936 Eddie was the musical director on the RMS Queen Mary. From 1937 to 1940 he led his own bands. Throughout the "30's Eddie still found time to do freelance work with Nat Gonella,Spike Hughes, Ray Noble and others.

The text is of a slave mother talking to her child about tomorrow's auction, where they will most likely be separated. Capturing poignancy and horror in an art song is an amazing feat. The first time we heard the song was January 21, 2001 at Hampton University when Lorraine McFadden Bell, soprano, gave her faculty recital "Art Songs and Spirituals by African American Composers." She sang Watch and Pray as well as another song by Undine Smith Moore, Love Let the Wind Cry How I Adore Thee (text by Sappho). For this writer, the African American art song is the pinnacle of music that has given me joy since my youth. I discovered gospel music on our local radio station in the mountains of West Virginia. As a young adult my interest expanded to include folk singers doing spirituals and, more recently, the spirituals arranged for Jessye Norman and Kathleen Battle. I also enjoyed Aretha Franklin and her magnificent instrument. Until recently, I had not heard art songs by African American composers. All that changed November 5, 2000 when Norfolk Art Song Society brought the elder statesman of this repertory, Dr. Willis Patterson, who compiled the Anthology
