Michael York Accompanying York on this new Americus Records release is pianist john bell young. Michael York and john bell young will be performing Enoch Arden http://michaelyork.net/enoch_arden/
Extractions: ACTOR MICHAEL YORK GIVES NEW LIFE TO ENOCH ARDEN Michael York, with star turns in such classic films as Romeo and Juliet, Cabaret, The Three Musketeers , and Loganís Run , and recent comedic appearances in the Austin Powers movies, is an exceptionally versatile actor. The release of a new CD reveals just how remarkable a storyteller he is. For the first time in more than forty years, Enoch Arden, Richard Straussís melodrama for narrator and piano, is given eloquent new life. Set to Alfred, Lord Tennysonís famous narrative poem, Enoch Arden presents an enormous challenge for any actor, making it all the more remarkable that only one other professional actor Claude Rains has ever recorded it. Accompanying York on this new Americus Records release is pianist John Bell Young. Jim Svejda of KUSC in Los Angeles hailed it as ìa stunning new recording ñ very different from any ëEnochí Iíve heardî while the celebrated pianist Stephen Hough commented ìMy goodness, it is a wonderful performance. It brought tears to my eyes.î CNN Headline News also called it ìa wonderful CD î and AudioBooksToday reviewed ìthis passionate and quite beautiful productionî as follows : ìYork displays the crisp diction and precise pacing that keep him frequently employed as an audiobook narrator. He approaches the material with the appropriate degree of warmth and vigor, but does so with great finesse matching the spirit of the material without overstating the obvious. Straussís music, as presented by Young, is vital and undeniably dramatic.î

Extractions: Aspen - Some music festivals are summer venues for major orchestras, such as the Tanglewood Music Festival in Lenox, Mass., serving for decades as the home away from home for the esteemed Boston Symphony. But audiences will not hear a professional symphony at the Aspen Music Festival. It has always taken a different approach to orchestral offerings, choosing to emphasize education. The festival has five orchestras, all composed of students of varying ages and skill levels. Members of its music faculty lead most sections of the two most prominent ensembles, the Aspen Festival Orchestra and Aspen Chamber Symphony. These orchestras give the students invaluable experience, allowing them to train with top-level conductors, this summer including James Conlon, Neville Marriner and Leonard Slatkin, and be front and center in high-profile performances.

Richard Strauss's "Enoch Arden" The Michael York and john bell young Recording (2002) Michael York is joined by pianist john bell young in this performance, which marks the first http://www.victorianweb.org/authors/tennyson/young.html
Extractions: In October 2002 Americus Records released a new recording of Richard Strauss's Enoch Arden , a melodrama for piano and narrator set to the poem of Alfred Lord Tennyson. The distinguished Shakespearian, as well as celebrated stage and film actor, Michael York is joined by pianist John Bell Young in this performance, which marks the first recording of the work with a renowned actor since Claude Rains teamed up with Glenn Gould more than 40 years ago. What Michael York brings to his interpretation of Enoch is extraordinary for its intimacy and poignancy. And while contemporary scholarship no longer regards Enoch Arden as one of Tennyson's best efforts in narrative poetry, it may be that Michael York's interpretation may give pause to devotees of the genre to reconsider the work's overall effect, codifying, as it does, Victorian word-painting. Messieurs York and Young planned to perform Enoch Arden from time to time during 2002 in the US and in Europe, sometimes as benefits for deserving arts institutions, and also in conjunction with a showing of the 1915 silent film, Enoch Arden , by William Christy Cabanne and D.W. Griffiths, starring Lillian Gish and Wallace Reid.

Extractions: Michael York has long been Hollywood's idea of the quintessential Englishman. He was the Christopher Isherwood character Brian Roberts, an English tutor in Weimar Berlin, in the film version of Cabaret. He played Pip in Great Expectations. He's Basil Exposition, head of British intelligence, in the Austin Powers movies. Lately, York has been the voice of a 19th century English archetype, narrating Enoch Arden, an epic poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson. He performs the work Sunday in Tarpon Springs, with pianist John Bell Young playing incidental music by Richard Strauss. Young has a home in the Tampa Bay area and has written for the St. Petersburg Times. Enoch Arden is about a shipwrecked sailor, presumed dead, who returns home to the Isle of Wight after 10 years to find that his wife has remarried, and her new husband is his childhood friend. Enoch chooses to remain in hiding so as not to intrude on their happiness.
Floridian: Classical Files by actor Michael York and pianist john bell young on this release. young, a St. Petersburg Times correspondent and reviewer of classical music, http://www.sptimes.com/2003/06/29/Floridian/Classical_Files.shtml
Extractions: The CDs accumulate during the season when live performances demand a critic's attention. Summer is a good time to catch up with them. Here are five recordings with Florida or Tampa Bay area connections: ENOCH ARDEN (AMERICUS) - For people of a certain age, Enoch Arden might ring a bell from long-ago English classes. It's a narrative poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson, the eminent Victorian best known for The Charge of the Light Brigade and the Arthurian saga Idylls of the King, but it is largely relegated nowadays to graduate school seminars on epic verse. Enoch Arden, published in 1864, is about a shipwrecked sailor, presumed dead, who returns home to the Isle of Wight after 10 years to find that his wife has remarried, and her new husband is his childhood friend. Enoch chooses to remain in hiding so as not to intrude on their happiness. Tennyson's narrative is a touching yarn on the theme of self-sacrifice, and it inspired Richard Strauss to compose incidental music for a reading, which is given a passionate performance by actor Michael York and pianist John Bell Young on this release. Young, a St. Petersburg Times correspondent and reviewer of classical music, wrote about his collaboration with York for the newspaper in October. York, whose film roles range from Cabaret to Austin Powers in Goldmember, throws himself into Tennyson's melodrama, and his expertise with English accents deftly differentiates between the working-class Enoch and the bourgeois miller who marries his wife. The spare, not terribly interesting music is early Strauss, and the composer later disavowed it, but Young brings a great sense of conviction to the 66-minute performance.

Bronika Kushkuley - Reviews john bell young, a wellknown pianist and musical critic (posted on the Internet on 1/15/2000). ÒI had a chance to hear the 12 year old or perhaps 13 http://www.eroica.com/bk-reviews.html
Extractions: Boston Globe correspondent Richard Buell in his review of her concert, May 27, 1998: Ò... the sheer fluency, accuracy, variety of tone, and articulation she could call upon was scarcely to be believed. That she seemed to be offering a real, even highly personal, interpretation of everything she played was even more remarkableÓ. He described the performance of Sarabande movement of BachÕs G Minor English Suite as: ÒSoulful and inward in emotion, subtly flexible as to phrasing and tempo, the performance spoke familiarly of matters that no 10-year-old ø not even 10-year-old Albert Schweitzer ø could know ofÓ. Richard Buell concluded his review of the concert with the following remark: 'Ò... the performances of HaydnÕs F-Major Sonata, the Ravel ÒOiseaux tristesÓ, SchumannÕs Abegg Variations, not to mention the shorter gee-whiz pieces, were ones that many an adult professional wouldn't disownÓ. John Bell Young , a well-known pianist and musical critic (posted on the Internet on 1/15/2000): ÒI had a chance to hear the 12 year old or perhaps 13 Bronika Kushkuley who plays Chopin, Bach and Rachmaninoff on MP3. . She is exceptionally gifted, and her playing is extraordinarily expressive, intelligent, rich and savvy for one so young. In fact, it is exceptionally expressive, intelligent, rich and savvy for a pianist of any age. She sports a strong musical profile, and I don't think it would be big stretch to say that, if she continues in this direction, she'll make quite a mark indeed...".
