Extractions: www.asianimprov.com William Roper is a familiar name to anyone even remotely in-touch with West Coast improvised music. His participation in any performance guarantees that any walls of preconceptions brought by the audience members AND band members will be broken down. At any performance he might just get up and walk around the audience and talk just as readily as playing his horn. Once, he covered his head with a black towel and started preaching when I was expecting to hear an instrumental solo. And that his axe of choice is the statistically aberrant (In creative improvised music) tuba makes a Roper performance an even more unique experience. Juneteenth is my first exposure to a Roper album that is entirely his. I hope to listen to many more. Tracks 1-3, 5, and 7 feature his ensemble Judicanti Responsura. Track 2 (Pigs, Pigs, Oh! Those Tasty Pigs by Roper) is a lovely, spacious exploration of form and sound using a wide extended vocabulary of glissandi, bends, and short stark phrases by Roper, Mitchell on vibes, and pianist Glenn Horiuchi getting inside the piano. Literally, it sounds like he is getting inside the piano strumming and muting strings. A lovely, gentle, performance.
Extractions: His extroverted antics and multi-colored fright wig might invite the instant dismissal of Cincinnati-based singer Robert "H-Bomb" Ferguson as some sort of comic lightweight. CNMAT provides a range of opportunities for students, professionals, and visiting scholars to engage in studies, conduct research, and participate in music performance projects. 2 Facilities Many grants and equipment donations helped CNMAT expand its facilities this year. A Yamaha 02R mixing board with metering bridge was integrated into the sound spatialization theatre in our main room for concerts, lecture/demonstrations, and research projects. A new multi-channel spatial audio system was installed in our recording studio, allowing composers to develop works involving spatialized sound. Several newly configured workstations were made available, with systems customized for hardware design and testing, music composition for film, audio dubbing and CD burning, and software development under Linux. 3 Education The established curriculum offered at CNMAT includes Musical Applications of Computers and Related Technologies, Advanced Topics in Computer Music, Introduction to Computer Music Composition, Music Perception and Cognition, directed research and independent study.

Genealogy And The Piano Makers - By Bill Kibby MIMIT Mrs wright wrote from Pinner about her ancestor, HJ (or JH) Brider, Stephen Kirkman and robert Kirkman contacted me separately Cousins, http://www.uk-piano.org/piano-gen/genealogy-and-the-piano-makers.html
Extractions: By the way, have you noticed that computer file folders can be arranged like a family tree, and you can use the same system for word-processing and photos. For example, the "Kibby" folder opens to reveal the children of an un-named Mr Kibby: Herbert's file opens to reveal his children: Herbert junior's opens to reveal his, including one William James Kibby, who married Beth Johnson to become Kibby-Johnson. Spouses and partners can be cross-referenced by creating shortcuts named "married to ...". One of the most unusual requests I have received in recent times was for a piano picture to put on a gravestone. Recent advances in computer technology have enabled high-quality images to be engraved into the stones, so we now have the option of seeing our dear departed staring out at us from the grave, not a popular idea with everyone! Another historical enquiry is concerned more with an address than a person: Marian Ferriday is compiling a history of the building which was previously known as 104, Park street, London: Can anyone help with further information about Guiliano Ajello, or Alfred Spencer, who were in business there? Another Bishop: Mr Cameron-Cathie wrote from London, enquiring about his ancestor, F.A. Bishop, who was also described as a piano maker. I have only found references to him as a piano dealer in the early 1900s, so perhaps he served an apprenticeship with a maker before that.

Merwin '48 applied a lifelong habit to a lifelong passion in his recent translation of Dante Alighieri's Purgatorio (Knopf, 2000). As a young man, Merwin befriended the poet Ezra Pound, who suggested he read and translate European medieval poetry. Merwin first tackled some Spanish ballads, only to be tackled by them. "I worked for a couple of years getting nowhere," says Merwin, a poet and translator by trade who majored in English at Princeton. Merwin finally did publish a selection of Spanish ballads in 1961 and followed up with translations of works by writers as diverse as Euripides and Pablo Neruda. But Merwin's reputation rests on his own poetry, for which he won the 1971 Pulitzer Prize. In 1998, he wrote a narrative poem on Hawaii and has taken on ecological causes.
