N.Y., May 20, 1968) was an active performer up until a month before she died, performing the Schumann Piano Concerto in April, 1968. Her family moved to the U.S. when she was one, in 1913. Though she did not begin piano lessons until age 13, within just a few years she was the winner of the American Matthay Assoc. Prize Contest. By age 20 she made her London recital debut, and two years later her New York debut. George Kehler's "The Piano in Concert" lists Carnegie Hall recitals almost every year up until her death. He states: "She was a serious artist with a dazzling technique and a pianist of good taste." This month's editorial column looks at three African-American women classical pianists:

Extractions: Up Catch all the Guardian news from the latest edition of our paper - Mon, Wed and Fri Pushing the boundaries: world renowned concert pianist Ali Wood will perform at the Aquarena tomorrow night. (Photo by Angie Simms.) Charity the key By KATE CAMPBELL DESPITE her small stature, Ali Wood is a giant among concert pianists. Geraldton will be able to witness her unique and dynamic performances on two occasions this week. Her first performance at the Aquarena on Thursday night comes straight from the heart, as she has donated her time for the charity family concert. The second will occur at the Queens Park Theatre on Saturday night. Ms Wood has achieved an inconceivable amount in her 22 years - from being the first Australian to debut at Carnegie Hall since Dame Nellie Melba 100 years ago to playing in 23 countries. But never losing sight of her goals, practising five to eight hours a day every day and proving her critics wrong, Ms Wood has become one of the most in-demand concert pianists in the world.

Extractions: A revolutionary approach to classical music Ali Wood is no ordinary concert pianist. The special lighting effects and costume changes, ranging from red bow tie and tails to jeans, give her performances a theatricality rarely associated with classical music recitals. This approach to classical music is drawing younger audiences back into the concert hall. Ali Wood appears across regional South Australia through the generous support of Country Arts SA's Major Sponsor for Season 2002, ETSA Utilities. Ali made her debut performance at New York's famous Carnegie Hall when she was just 19 years of age. The last Australian to make a debut there was Dame Nellie Melba, over 100 years ago. Internationally acclaimed as an artistic and creative virtuoso, this young Australian pianist has already completed two world tours - last year and this year - and performed in over twenty countries. This year her schedule included a six week tour of the Peoples Republic of China - the most extensive tour in that country ever undertaken by a foreign artist. Ali Wood was playing concerts by the time she was twelve years old, and in her early teens won numerous competitions and awards. As a thirteen year old, she became the youngest pianist in Australia to be awarded a Performers Diploma with Distinction. Ali left school when she was fifteen to practise the piano eight to ten hours a day, seven days a week.

Our land fills and tips both in the city and the country are filling at twice the rate they were just 25 years ago. The raw material is trucked to a property an hour and a halfs drive north of Perth to land also owned by the Atlas group. There, the organic waste is composted in long rows which are turned by state of the art compost making machines called scarabs, taking their name from the dung beetle that spends its life turning animal waste until it breaks down.
