You can't, of course, so you try to plot the best available schedule while allowing time to eat and sleep a little. Extractions: Arriving back from the Victo Festival at 8 PM Tuesday night after a ten plus hour journey from Quebec, and stopping briefly at DMG, I headed over to the first night of the Vision Festival! Yes, I was a bit burnt out after a week and some 24 sets up at Victo, but the Vision Fest is another great fest that occurs just once a year and this yearÕs week-long 31 set schedule looked to be the best ever. And as it turned out, it was the best Vision Festival, Patricia Nicholson Parker and her staff had outdone themselves! Lucky for me, I was there for every set except for three Ð the opening Sun Ra Arkestra set, because I was still in transit, the Amiri Baraka set because I need a rest and the Joe McPhee set, because I had to catch that last train back to Jersey. The first set I caught was by the Khan Jamal Quintet and it is one of the only sets I had any complaints about. Khan is an amazing vibeist and he had an amazing all-star unit: Jemeel Moondoc on alto sax, Roy Campbell on trumpets, plus a Philly rhythm team of Dylan Taylor on bass and Dwight James on drums, plus poetess Pheralyn Dove. I've dug Khan Jamal ever since hearing him with Sunny MurrayÕs Untouchable Factor in the 70Õs. Khan had played with Matt Shipp at one of those Vision mini-fests at the Mercury Lounge and knocked us out yet again. Matt has since invited him on a couple of those Blue Series releases. The problem that I had with this set was that the poet Ms. Dove read her words over most of the music, giving Khan, Jemeel and Roy a minimum of solo space. I did dig some of her poetry, but it was a bit too much. I know that Khan couldÕve pushed Jemeel and Roy into higher flights of fancy, but it only happened in spurts.

Extractions: Not long ago, Locrian Co-Director John Kreckler and I were sitting around, trying to find a suitable piece to open an upcoming concert. After about a half-hour of listening to tapes, we came upon a clarinet-piano piece by British composer Julian Anderson. We put the cassette in, and about ten seconds into the music, we both started to laugh. "This piece is so Jonathan," one of us said. I tell this story to point out the thing I most admire in Locrian pianist Jonathan Faiman's playing: It has a personality, a musical point of view that is easily identifiable. Call it the "Faiman sound," if you will. And there are certain pieces that fit this "sound" to perfection, pieces with driving rhythms, with lots of staccato, with dramatic silences. We choose these pieces for Jonathan to play on our concerts, and he plays them beautifully. I don't mean to say that Jonathan can only play staccato. He has the technique and intelligence to interpret any piece you put in front of him. It's just that there's a certain kind of music that suits him so well that when he plays it, he's not so much interpreting it as he is communicating it directly.

The free concert spotlights two talented Mannes students: conductor David Rosenmeyer and violinist Mingzhao Zhou. David Hayes is Director of Orchestral and Conducting Studies at Mannes College of Music. Samuel Wong is the Principal Conductor of The Mannes Orchestra. David Rosenmeyer makes his debut as conductor of The Mannes Orchestra with his graduation presentation for his Master of Music degree, which he will receive in May 2003. Mr. Rosenmeyer was born in Argentina and began his music studies in Israel, where he lived through his high school years. Returning to Argentina, he graduated from the orchestral conducting program of the Catholic University of Argentina and from the choral conducting program of Juan Jose Castro Conservatory of Music. In 1995, he was awarded 1st Prize at the Argentine Ministry of Music Conducting Competition, and in 1997, he won 1st Prize at The Chamber Orchestra of The National Congress of Argentina Conducting Competition. In 1996 and 2002, Mr. Rosenmeyer conducted the Orquesta Sinfonica Nacional de Argentina, becoming one of the youngest conductors of the orchestra in its history, and he has also appeared as guest conductor with other orchestras in Argentina, Brazil, and Chile.
