Extractions: By Ken Dryden Immediately after registration at the annual IAJE Conference, the number of scheduled performances, clinics, panel discussions, etc., make you wonder how you can absorb it all. You can't, of course, so you try to plot the best available schedule while allowing time to eat and sleep a little. Media types (at least speaking for myself) tend to start cruising back and forth between the convention center and the hotels looking for old friends and trying to spot musicians, publicists, and editors that we have been emailing without ever meeting in person. I didn't catch much in the way of music on day one, as my body was still on eastern time and it wore down early after a very long day of travel. "Expanding the Next Generation Jazz Audience" provided good interaction between the guests and the audience, though the panel was a little too large for a one hour session to give everyone a chance to talk. At one point, the audience protested when a panelist tried to compare jazz hack Kenny G to the late Grover Washington, Jr. All About Jazz Publisher Michael Ricci was a participant in the panel, though the panel's size (two people were added at the last minute in case

Modern Drummer Dan will cause your mouth to drop when you hear him take off on Jazzanians. To call his drum solo exciting is to sell him short, but it's awesome soloing like this that characterizes the entire recording." [Trio Brubeck CD, Telarc] Jazz Times "Dan is phenomenal with polyrhythms, percussion and drum soloing. His deceptive approach sounds like more than one player, but Dan is creating the whole percussion." Dr. Herb Wong "Dan steals the show. He's a crisp, active drummer who makes the most of his feature, Jazzanians [Trio Brubeck CD, Telarc], playing rhythms with accuracy as well as joy. His solo is masterful both well-planned and surprising, accurate and exuberant." Stereophile For his seventh Telarc album, pianist Dave Brubeck again reinvents himself with fresh verve. A special session featuring the legendary musician with his four sons, the ten-tune album originated in January 1994 while the Brubeck family had gathered in Connecticut for the holidays. DMG Newsletter the first Vision Fest appearance by PhillyÕs Raymond King and BostonÕs Jane wong, Master jazz pianist Dave Burrell put together a unique cast of all http://downtownmusicgallery.com/Main/Visionfest-2004.html
Extractions: Arriving back from the Victo Festival at 8 PM Tuesday night after a ten plus hour journey from Quebec, and stopping briefly at DMG, I headed over to the first night of the Vision Festival! Yes, I was a bit burnt out after a week and some 24 sets up at Victo, but the Vision Fest is another great fest that occurs just once a year and this yearÕs week-long 31 set schedule looked to be the best ever. And as it turned out, it was the best Vision Festival, Patricia Nicholson Parker and her staff had outdone themselves! Lucky for me, I was there for every set except for three Ð the opening Sun Ra Arkestra set, because I was still in transit, the Amiri Baraka set because I need a rest and the Joe McPhee set, because I had to catch that last train back to Jersey. The first set I caught was by the Khan Jamal Quintet and it is one of the only sets I had any complaints about. Khan is an amazing vibeist and he had an amazing all-star unit: Jemeel Moondoc on alto sax, Roy Campbell on trumpets, plus a Philly rhythm team of Dylan Taylor on bass and Dwight James on drums, plus poetess Pheralyn Dove. I've dug Khan Jamal ever since hearing him with Sunny MurrayÕs Untouchable Factor in the 70Õs. Khan had played with Matt Shipp at one of those Vision mini-fests at the Mercury Lounge and knocked us out yet again. Matt has since invited him on a couple of those Blue Series releases. The problem that I had with this set was that the poet Ms. Dove read her words over most of the music, giving Khan, Jemeel and Roy a minimum of solo space. I did dig some of her poetry, but it was a bit too much. I know that Khan couldÕve pushed Jemeel and Roy into higher flights of fancy, but it only happened in spurts.

Hyman was in town to demonstrate his Century of Jazz Piano, Jazz, led by the documentarian himself. High-profile artists were heard on stages around the Hyatt Regency hotel and the adjacent Louisiana Superdome. The lineup was dizzying and impressive: Panamanian-born pianist Danilo Perez charmed listeners with a blend of hard-driving Caribbean rhythms and personal charisma, and pianist Billy Childs, bassist Buster Williams and drummer Carl Allen demonstrated the rare art of true acoustic-jazz interplay on a set featuring music from their new Skim Coat on indie Metropolitan Records. Alto saxophonist Steve Slagle turned edgy and demonstrative, with the help of a quartet including guitarist Dave Stryker and drummer Matt Wilson. And a sort of saxual nirvana was achieved by the accomplished reedmen of the Keilworth Saxophone Section. Wynton Marsalis and his disciples largely relocated to New York before discovering large-scale success. These days, a hometown-based career may be an option for several artists who scheduled high-profile French Quarter gigs to coincide with IAJE.

Locrian Chamber Players JONATHAN FAIMAN by david Macdonald Scene 1 Not long ago, Locrian CoDirector John Kreckler When he was thirteen, renowned pianist John Perry came to town and taught a http://www.locrian.org/profiles_faiman.html
Extractions: Not long ago, Locrian Co-Director John Kreckler and I were sitting around, trying to find a suitable piece to open an upcoming concert. After about a half-hour of listening to tapes, we came upon a clarinet-piano piece by British composer Julian Anderson. We put the cassette in, and about ten seconds into the music, we both started to laugh. "This piece is so Jonathan," one of us said. I tell this story to point out the thing I most admire in Locrian pianist Jonathan Faiman's playing: It has a personality, a musical point of view that is easily identifiable. Call it the "Faiman sound," if you will. And there are certain pieces that fit this "sound" to perfection, pieces with driving rhythms, with lots of staccato, with dramatic silences. We choose these pieces for Jonathan to play on our concerts, and he plays them beautifully. I don't mean to say that Jonathan can only play staccato. He has the technique and intelligence to interpret any piece you put in front of him. It's just that there's a certain kind of music that suits him so well that when he plays it, he's not so much interpreting it as he is communicating it directly.
