Extractions: Kincardine Summer Music Festival 2005 Site Map Al Capo (the beginning) History KSMF started in the spring of 1992, when a local resident, Ron Lewis, and John Schnarr, a local music teacher, approached Chamber Music Kincardine (CMK) to propose that CMK, in addition to presenting local chamber concerts, support and help create a music camp. The first Kincardine Summer Music Festival was organized in only a few months with a handful of volunteers; most notably Ron Lewis, Hans Braul, Kathryn Braul, Irv Mills and Carolyn Mills. We wanted to offer musical learning and playing opportunities for everyone, especially young musicians, during the day. We also wanted to create a concert series for all to attend in the evenings. By combining the two, we were able to offer our students the opportunity to study and play with world-class artists during the day, attend their concerts in the evening, and grow to know and appreciate these performers in person. The Asian Improv pianist Jon Jang and Francis wong founded this label in 1987. Jang s followuprecording, a sextet date that features david Murray on tenor and James http://www.furious.com/perfect/asianimprov.html
Extractions: Adventures in Cross Cultural Synthesis Jon Jang and his Pan Asian Arkestra, courtesy of In Motion Magazine by Dave Kaufman (August 1998) Eastern music has had a considerable impact on the evolution of jazz since the 1950's. However, jazz musicians have only begun to explore the immensely rich variety of musical styles originating from the Asian continent. Some of the freshest, most innovative, and compelling sounds have emerged from a movement known as the Asian Improv. This movement consists of a growing number of (mostly) Asian American artists such as Jon Jang, Francis Wong, Glenn Horiuchi, Mark Izu, Miya Masaoka, Fred Ho, Jeff Song, Jason Kao Hwang, and Vijay Iyer . African American artists such as Anthony Brown and James Newton have also played an instrumental role in the evolution of this art form. Asian Improv music is not reflected in any one style, but in a strikingly diverse body of work that draws on a range of traditional classical and folk musics from countries such as China, Japan, India, Korea, and the Philippines. These artists all share a profound appreciation of the jazz tradition from Ellington to Mingus to the contemporary vanguard. This music is not borne out of hybridity, facile East-meets-West fusion or any conscious mixing of styles but of a more organic deeply rooted understanding of the jazz idiom as well as the music of their ancestry. The Asian Improv movement is also a product of a growing political consciousness and activism in the Asian artistic (and broader) community. Many of these artists are first generation American-born and have experienced a sense of marginalization and exclusion from the American mainstream and music industry. Although they may not have experienced the overt racism and institutional discrimination to the extent that their parents have, the culture of division and intolerance of difference has informed their lives and their art. This sentiment is eloquently expressed in the following quote by pianist Vijay Iyer, from the liner notes to his excellent CD

Extractions: Main Stairway For those who can't see the previous entry it's a real pity ... cos' it was the nomination list of the 15th Taiwan Golden Melody Awards ... ah but heck I shall give a rough translation anyway. Nominated for Best Album were those of Fish Leong (Beautiful Life), Jiang Hui, Faye Wong (To Love), Jolin Tsai (Magic), Jay Chou (Ye Hui Mei) and Xie Yuwei. This is going to be hard. But I don't know the Xie Yuwei ... so I guess I can't really comment, but I think it's gonna be tough-going for Fish Leong and Jiang Hui. But where's Unbelievable (Lee Hom)? Strangers (Tanya Chua)?! Best Lyricist hopefuls are the composers of "Yezi" (Leaves) recorded by Ah-Sang (as it appears on Qiangwei zhilian), Song Yueting's "Life's A Struggle". Also Faye Wong for her "Bu Liu", Xie Zhihao for the song he penned for Jiang Hui, Fang Wenshan for "Dongfengpo" and Jay Chou for "Ti Tian". Half the list is replicated for Best Composer , including Yezi, Bu Liu (Faye Wong), Xie Zhihao, and Jay Chou for "Dongfengpo". The only guy who's different is the Wong Lee Hom for the jazzy Love Love Love.

Extractions: chamber series ONCE headline writers get a look at the three babes in the Eroica Trio , it's little wonder that a "t" often finds its way into their name by mistake. Incidentally, the "babes" mention isn't sexist it's how they've promoted themselves since their first appearance in 1991. The trio has modeled for the likes of Elle, Glamour, Detour, Swing and Smoke Affair magazines. They'll be displaying their wares, visually and musically, on Friday at Orvis Auditorium for the Honolulu Chamber Music Series. Audience members are invited to "chat with the babes" at 7 and listen to their concert at 8 p.m. The Eroica three are pianist Erika Nickrenz, violinist Adela Pena and cellist Sara Sant'Ambrogio I almost wrote "Ambrosia." Sara is quoted in the Wall Street Journal as saying, "We enjoy working out and looking good. Why should we hide all that behind 1950s ball gowns that we would not be caught dead wearing to a party?" And where other performers ask for cheese, pupus and the like for a Green Room snack, the Eroica threesome requests grapes, low-fat yogurt and mineral water. Viva L'Eroica! ... SPEAKING of talented beauties
Extractions: POSITIF magazine (France) Positif , the great rival to Cahiers du Cinema , doesn't actually compile "official" Top Tens. Instead, each issue has a "Bloc Notes" section written by one of the magazine's critics, and including - in the final issue of each year - that critic's Films of the Year. Since 1981, all end-of-the-year lists have been compiled by Michel Ciment , the best-known of the Positif critics, except for 1982 when the "Bloc Notes" section - and therefore the annual list - was written by Isabelle Jordan . The older 1965 list is also by M. Ciment. Thanks to the indefatigable Steve Erickson Lists are in alphabetical order.
