Extractions: Journal Arts Writer The Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto, an evening of Mozart and Gustav Mahler's monumental Resurrection Symphony are among the highlights of next year's Rhode Island Philharmonic season. Peter Serkin, one of the most respected pianists of his generation, will also be joining the orchestra for one of the greatest of all concertos the epic Brahms Second. The concerts take place at Veterans Memorial Auditorium. Music director Larry Rachleff opens the orchestra's classical series Oct. 15 with South American-born pianist Sergio Tiempo playing the popular Tchaikovsky Concerto. Tiempo, who appeared with the orchestra last May in the Greig Concerto, has just the sort of romantic panache that should make the Tchaikovsky sing. Stravinsky's Firebird Suite and Charles Ives' Variations on America round out the evening. Music by Mozart will be featured Oct. 29, when violinist Peter Zazofsky and violist Steven Ansell join the orchestra for the Sinfonia Concertante. Zazofsky and Ansell are both members of the Boston-based Muir String Quartet, and Ansell is principal with the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

The aural evidence certainly bears out the written notes, for this music is fascinatingly simple, yet unusual in the composer's highly personalized phrasing, changes and chord structures.
