Extractions: Piano recent successes, December 2002 We are pleased to announce that Ian Fountain and Arnaldo Cohen were recently appointed to the the teaching staff of the Piano Department. Alexander Satz has continued his inspiring work as Broadwood Visiting Professor. He makes three week-long visits to the Academy, each time giving 2 masterclasses and also about 20 hours of individual lessons. Professor Satz himself selects from audition the students with whom he feels it most productive to work and sees them once or twice on each visit. Maria Curcio has continued her valued masterclasses, which have a very loyal following. Our third "Visiting Professor" is Stephen Hough, who also gives both individual lessons and open classes on his visits to the Academy. Over the past few years, there has been a consistent number of successes for Academy pianists in International Competitions (both as soloists and in ensemble playing), often with consequent concert engagements and career opportunities. While this is in no way regarded as the prime "target" of our work, it is gratifying when students are seen as succeeding at this level. Over the past five or so years these have included:

Extractions: All this week, Donald Macleod journeys to countries that played a part in the life and music of Frederick Delius, beginning today with America. The composer spent two years there as a young man, where, for the most part, he ostensibly oversaw an orange plantation in Florida. However, he was more preoccupied with the sights and sounds around him and composing for the first time. This programme features music that Delius wrote during this period, as well as music he composed later in which he drew on the memories of his American sojourn. Musikkavisen - Arnold Bax - Piano Works 1 ashley wass (piano) Naxos 8.557439.

Extractions: Jesse Mills, violin As a member of the FLUX Quartet from 2001-2003, he played in many concert halls around the world, performing music composed during the last 50 years. Among these concerts were 3 performances of Morton Feldman's String Quartet No. 3, a six-hour-long work of immense beauty. Currently, Mills is a member of Nurse Kaya, an ensemble comprised of string quartet plus bass and drums which exclusively plays compositions written by its members; much of this music involves improvisation. The group plays in traditional venues such as concert halls and clubs, as well as in schools, hospitals, and jails. Nurse Kaya was recently awarded a Residency Partnership Grant from Chamber Music America, and the group will embark on a tour of the Rocky Mountain Region in the fall of 2004. Mills is also a member of the Denali Trio, with cellist Sarah Carter and pianist Ashley Wass. After playing together at the Ravinia and Marlboro Music Festivals, the Denali Trio was formed in 2003 and continues to play diverse programs, which unite new works with traditional examples from the extensive piano trio repertoire. This past season included a debut tour of England as well as concerts in Boston and New York. Future engagements for the trio include performances in Chicago, New York, and at the Lincoln Festival in the UK. During the past two seasons, various musical projects have taken Mills around the United States, Mexico, Japan, Puerto Rico, Belgium, Luxembourg, and England. He looks forward to continuing his sundry music projects in an attempt to find continuity between performing, composing, and improvising.
