Jerry Wright EAST TEXAS DULCIMER January 2001 Re: Dixie Darling by Neal Walters Not too long ago, I invested in the Bear Family Carter Family compilation called "In the Shadow of Clinch Mountain." It's a 12-CD set of virtually all the Carter material and it comes with a really wonderful book written by Charles Wolfe who is widely known as a Country Music scholar. He's a prolific author has also written liner notes to literally dozens of albums. Anyway, here's what he had to say on page 68 about "Dixie Darling": Quote One of the best-known songs from the first Decca session was 'My Dixie Darling', which the Carters had learned from their old friend Harmon Jackson, a fiddler and singer from Russell County. Originally titled 'Dixie Darlings', the song was composed by the Missouri vaudeville songwriter and perfromer Perey Wenrich. One of the more successful Tin Pan Alley songwriters during the first decade of the 20th century. Wenrich was best known for his songs like 'Put on Your Old Grey Bonnet', 'On Moonlight Bay', and 'When You Wore a Tulip'. Though earlier accounts had the date of 'Dixie Darlings' as 1916, in fact versions of it were in print by 1907.

Extractions: What could be more dangerous than trying to bring law and order to Colombia, a country mired in a brutal civil war funded by a six- billion-dollar-a-year cocaine trade? WIDE ANGLE follows Maria Cristina Chirolla, the courageous head of the attorney general's anti-drug unit. Her actions in seizing the lavish homes of drug lords and ordering military raids on drug laboratories ultimately drive an assassination plot against her. Shaken, she ponders whether the battle is worth fighting - and at what personal cost? This is a deeply personal filmic journey by director Hubert Davis, the son of former Harlem Globetrotter Mel Davis. Mel, now a coach for young basketball players in Vancouver, recalls falling in love at first sight with Hubert's mother, a white woman, at a time when racism seemed to make their union impossible. Despite their emotional bond still resonating over 20 years later Mel chose to marry a black woman, with whom he also had a son. The filmmaker unites both sides of his family, speaking movingly about the complex web of love, betrayal and family ties that bind them all. Through personal interviews, archival footage and home movies, Davis delves into his father's past in the hope of finding his own future. This program also contains two award-winning autobiographical shorts about parents and children: Melba Williams' "A Thousand Words" and Jay Rosenblatt's "I Used to Be a Filmmaker."
