Extractions: Pianist Arkadi Volodos in Solo Recital San Francisco Symphony Volodos in Recital by Erik D. Dyar [Editors note: Unable to attend this concert, I asked Erik Dyar to write a review for PENINSULA REVIEWS. Mr. Dyar, an architect by profession, is also an accomplished pianist who performed a recital in Carmel, California last year.] Hearing Arcadi Volodos in recital on Sunday night at Davies Hall in San Francisco convinced me that he is a pianist of whom legends are made. Mr. Volodos put on a display of incredible pianism and musicianship that had to be heard to be believed. The last time we had the opportunity to hear him live was in a Carmel Music Society recital in Carmels Sunset Center in November 2000, where much of his program was devoted to works by Schubert, Schumann, and Brahms. This turned out to be a disappointment after hearing his recordings of Rachmaninoff and Scriabin, where Volodos convinces us that he is one of the great interpreters of these two composers. Fortunately, on Sunday night, we had ample opportunity to observe his strengths as an artist and performer, since the first half was devoted exclusively to Rachmaninoff and Scriabin. At the beginning of the program, he created a hypnotic soundscape around Scriabins lush, ambiguous harmonies and intense textures. One way you know you are hearing a great artist is, if during a performance, you cant imagine anyone playing the work better. This was certainly true here, and this conviction has remained with me. Volodos performance was so convincing that it made me hope he will record all of Scriabins important works for posterity, but most certainly the sonatas. One can never be sure when someone of Volodos gifts will come along and fit so appropriately with this composers music.

Extractions: Arcadi Volodos: Liszt Would Have Approved by Joe Kahn Last Friday evening, Russian pianist Arcadi Volodos performed in the A.J. Fletcher Opera Theater in Raleigh as part of the Great Artists Series. Coming with great fanfare, hailed as a "genius of the piano," compared to Horowitz, Serkin and the like, perhaps expectations were too high. While there were some wonderfully sensitive playing, the performance as a whole was a mixed bag. It must be said from the outset that Volodos has a spectacular technique which, unfortunately, is not always matched by his musicianship. To be sure, he does not rely merely on deft finger-work to carry the performance as do some great technicians; instead, he often exaggerates dynamics and stretches his tempos to the extreme to achieve his musical goal. What he lacks is subtlety. Nowhere was this more evident than in Robert Schumann's Kreisleriana Op.16, a work full of subtlety and nuance. Volodos's elastic rubatos sometimes came to a near standstill, His fortes were crashing and his pianos barely audible even from the third row. On the other hand, Johannes Brahms's piano transcription of the slow movement, Theme and Variations, from his Sextet, Op.18, a gift to Clara Schumann, fared quite well under Volodos's fingers. These variations never veer far from the original melody, thus limiting his tendency for musical over-emoting.

Feinberg was faithful to the original intent but enlarged the whole timber of the work to a level of great power. Volodos is a young spirited player who obviously loves this short (9.29) organistic piano piece. I would like to be around to hear him play it after another 50 years Acknowledgements: Thank you to the following for submitting this recording and for your comments: Date First Submitted: Purchasing: Suggested Purchasing Sources

Extractions: October 10, 2001 Russian piano virtuoso Arcadi Volodos will perform the second concert in Wake Forest University's Secrest Artists Series on Oct. 25 at 8 p.m. in Wait Chapel. Volodos, who studied at Moscow Conservatory, made his critically acclaimed Carnegie Hall debut in 1998. His first recording, "Volodos: Piano Transcriptions," released in 1997, drew attention from music critics across the country. His most recent recording, a live performance of the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, was released in fall 2000 and was nominated for a Grammy. Often compared to Vladimir Horowitz, Volodos won the 1999 Gramophone Award in the Instrumental Category. The Wake Forest concert program will include works by Brahms, Schumann, Schubert and Liszt. Born in St. Petersburg in 1972, Volodos began his musical training studying voice, following the example of his parents, who were professional singers. Although he had played the piano from the age of eight, he did not devote himself to serious piano study until 1987. During the 1999-2000 season, Volodos toured the United States with the San Francisco Symphony conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas. In addition to recital performances across Europe and North America, Volodos also performed with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony.

Robert Schumann , and Sergei Rachmaninoff were all virtuoso pianists. Most pianists specialize in certain composer(s)'s music or a certain period to some extent.
Extractions: What price big names? At a thoroughly well-established 53 years of age, Mitsuko Uchida is probably the most famous among this particular trio of pianists, though the 29-year-old Arcadi Volodos's obvious star quality may well make him even more widely known before long. Anthony Goldstone, on the other hand, is an Englishman of whom, though he is in his late fifties, many readers are likely never to have heard. For all that, he seems to me by far the most penetrating, stylish, interesting, and downright musicianly musician of the three. All three of our pianists are well and faithfully recorded, Uchida with the darkest sound, and Goldstone with the brightest. Bernard Jacobson INTERNATIONAL PIANO: Throughout Goldstone displays a gripping sense of musical drama and structure, a natural feeling for the rhythmic ebb and flow of a phrase, and a singer's feeling for the dynamic arch of a melody. In all these respects, as well as his warm tone and his tendency to group fast notes into large impulsive units, I was often reminded of Schnabel's playing of this work. But Goldstone's finger technique seems more reliable that Schnabel's and the equal of any of the above-mentioned Schubertians. This is especially evident in the posthumous sonata in C minor, where Goldstone's clarity in fast passages is on a par with even Richter's and Brendel's - and without any of their musical "ticks" or forced sound. His tempo for the "A" sections of the finale is truly precipitous at dotted crotchet=177 (relaxed only slightly for the "B" and "C" themes).
