Extractions: Let me state my conclusion at the outset of this review. This is a fantastic CD - both from the point of view of the repertoire and the quality of playing. It is a fine exposition of American piano music from the 20th century. Not only does it represent two undoubted masterpieces by Aaron Copland, it introduces two works by Paul Creston and one by Mark Zuckerman. All deserve our wholehearted attention. I did a little survey amongst a few of my musical friends:- 1) Do you know any piano pieces by Aaron Copland?

... It's an absorbing 20-minute work, whose elements of colour, harmony and direction are both animated from within and deeply expressive, with a well-balanced formal framework that makes it very satisfying to take on." Ostinato Background The pianist, peter vinograde, is featured in slide 13, thanks to photographerSusan Johann. I must make special mention of my photographs of four sculpted http://www.thelarkascending.org/TLA2_Ostin/OstinBgd.html
Extractions: Background This is the first such work that I have created specifically for web reception, and thus it has had no previous live performance with 35-millimeter slides. Like my first such work, Verlaine Variations , this one consists of images that have been specifically designed to cross-fade with each other at particular durations at specific junctures in the music. Alexej Steinhardt was crucial to its success as a sequence or, as I like to call it, choreography. The musical work titled Ostinato is from the Prelude, Ostinato, and Fugue for Piano by Nicolas Flagello (1928-1994). The performance used here is that of Peter Vinograde from the CD titled Nicolas Flagello (Albany, NY: Albany Records, 1997). The Music Intended for solo piano, Prelude, Ostinato, and Fugue The Prelude begins with a restless searching, then builds to a massive climax, and then subsides. The Ostinato consists of a set of variations over an ascending minor scale, which functions as a basso ostinato that appears in several different keys. Beginning with a melancholy lyricism, it, too, builds to a tempestuous climax. The Fugue is a propulsive piece that subsumes contrapuntal intricacies within a vehicle for virtuoso pianism. A three-voice exposition is followed by several developmental episodes, culminating in a chordal augmentation of the subject, marked furiosamente, that leads to a stunning coda.

Extractions: Since Eugen d'Albert gave concerts of the complete Beethoven Piano Sonatas in the late 19th century, and Artur Schnabel completed his recordings of the entire set in 1935, Beethoven sonata cycles have lost some of their glamour, becoming quite unexceptionalâcommon, even. Numerous recordings, including those of Claudio Arrau, Wilhelm Backhaus, Wilhelm Kempff, and more recently by Daniel Barenboim, Alfred Brendel, Richard Goode, and Seymour Lipkin, have been made. Each year there seem to be at least two or three "marathon concerts" in the city. Lisa Yui and the others pictured on this page are among the 30 pianists to perform in the Beethoven at Yamaha series. Indeed, between March 10 and May 12, another is to take place: Beethoven at Yamaha, a nine-part lecture-concert series of the 32 Beethoven Piano Sonatas, at the recently inaugurated Yamaha Artist Services Piano Salon. A diverse collection of pianists will gather in celebration of this cornerstone of the piano repertoire. This begs the question: Why yet another cycle of the complete Beethoven Piano Sonatas?
DCC [In The News] Young pianist to Give Benefit Concert at DCC Release Date July 7, 2005 PreCollege Division, where he studied for three years with Dr. peter vinograde. http://www.sunydutchess.edu/news/yp.html
Extractions: Release Date July 7, 2005 Jeffrey Brown, a student at Columbia University and the Juilliard School, will give a benefit concert with music by Bach, Beethoven, Schumann, and Prokofiev on Thursday, July 7 at 5:00 p.m. at the Dutchess Hall Theater at Dutchess Community College. Sponsored by the Dutchess Community College Summer Piano Institute, the concert will benefit the DCC MusicLink Scholarship Fund for economically disadvantaged children. Tickets for the concert are $10, $5 for children, seniors, faculty, and staff of DCC, and free for students, their parents, and faculty of the Summer Piano Institute. For more information about the concert or the Institute, phone Julie Wegener, Music School Director, at (845) 431-8916. An Accord resident and graduate of Rondout Valley High School, Brown is an instructor and chief counselor for the DCC Summer Piano Institute, a four-day piano immersion experience open to students ages five to 18 playing piano at all levels. The program, part of the DCC Music School, runs July 5 through 8 at the main campus in Poughkeepsie. Last summer, Jeff was chief counselor at the Summer Piano Institute, said Wegener. He taught a few lessons and a class when one instructor was unexpectedly ill and unable to come in. The students loved Jeff's teaching and so did I! His relationships with the younger kids are delightful, and he is a true inspiration to the older kids. Brown began studying piano with Wegener when he was 11 years old. At age 13, he was accepted at the Manhattan School of Music Pre-College Division, where he studied for three years with Dr. Peter Vinograde. At the Manhattan School of Music Pre-College Division, Jeff won the Carl Owen Scholarship Award and received an honorable mention at the Young Pianist Concerto Competition of New Jersey.
