Extractions: Warwick Thompson introduces a recital given last month at London's Royal Festival Hall by pianist Mitsuko Uchida. Music by Schubert and Beethoven as well as Boulez's Notations, a set of 12 pieces, each only 12 bars long and exploring a different musical issue. Duration: 1 hour 45 minutes Mitsuko Uchida (piano)
Extractions: [69'34"] full-price by Johann D'Souza It is a known fact that Beethoven's Second Piano Concerto was actually his first and that his First was his second. The reason being that he had made no less than four major changes to the former, delaying its trip to the publishers. As a result of this it was assigned as No.2. These concertos were very dear to Beethoven and about five years lapsed before they were actually published. While Beethoven did perform them in public, these majestic works could not be played by any other than himself. When he did send his second piano concerto to the printers, he confessed: "I do not pass it off as one of my best because I am keeping the better ones for myself until I myself make a journey, yet you need not be ashamed to print it". The first two piano concertos are so characteristically Mozartian that an amateur could easily believe them to be a couple of Mozart's late piano concertos. The opening bars of Beethoven's First Concerto sounds like Mozart's last C major Concerto K.503 (No.25, 1786); however it is not long before Beethoven's harmonic expansions bring to it its own distinct features. Beethoven was already striking it out as a prolific pianist - mind you, by the time of his death he had composed 32 Sonatas for the piano, 12 Sonatas for violin and piano, all topped off with the five piano concertos.

Extractions: Mitsuko Uchida @ Reinberger Chamber Hall 2/2/04 When you have a chance to hear any of Beethoven's last three piano sonatas should be a treat, but what do you call an opportunity to hear all three in a single evening performed by one of the most gifted pianist of our day: "A Night in Heaven." That night was Monday February 2, 2004 at Severance Hall in the concert hall and the pianist was Mitsuko Uchida. These sonatas were written in the final years of Beethoven's life and unlike the earlier heroic sonatas these turned inward. The pieces themselves push the limit of the known sonata form. There can be a tendency for a performer to overplay these pieces but Uchida gave a straightforward reading of the work. She emerges herself deep into the soul of the work, playing beautifully and insightfully In Piano Sonata No. 30 On Piano Sonata No. 31 she displayed a style of controlled heroism and performed an amazing transition from the Fuga: to the Allegro ma no troppo , a disorienting musical moment as if experiencing a moment of personal enlightenment.

PlaybillArts: Features: Learning From Beethoven mitsuko uchida plays the composer s Fourth Piano Concerto this month with the New pianist mitsuko uchida who was born in Japan, trained in Vienna, http://www.playbillarts.com/features/article/1676.html
Extractions: Mitsuko Uchida plays the composer's Fourth Piano Concerto this month with the New York Philharmonic. But she doesn't hesitate before saying, simply, that her biggest influence when playing Beethoven, is Beethoven. "If I didn't have the music I would study from what other people did, but he did leave the music, so that's what I am working with. You cannot learn about Beethoven from anyone else besides Beethoven." Mitsuko Uchida photo by Zoe Dominic "He reaches such extremes in the Third Piano Concerto, in the dark drama of the first movement and the ethereal second movement, before he comes back down to earth. The Fourth Concerto is much more introverted. The tragedy and extremes are all there, but it's done differently. And because of the introspection of the music, it brings you into a different sphere of extremes. I think this is one of the most overall conflicted pieces of music, even for Beethoven." If you still don't understand why the Fourth is her favorite, Ms. Uchida suggests that you listen to the piece, adding with a laugh, that if "I had to explain in words why I love it so much I wouldn't play a concert!"

Her playing has an extraordinary sense of equilibrium: between intellectual rigour and naturalness of expression; between acute awareness of tradition and an eternal quest for discovery; between personal commitment and objective understanding; between beauty and truth. All this would be remarkable in any musician, but is particularly striking when one considers the diverse cultural influences on Uchida's life and career. Japanese by birth, trained in Vienna , she has lived in London for more than two decades and is happy to call herself an Englishwoman. Most reference books give her birthplace as Tokyo , though she admits this is a calculated simplification. Actually I decided at the age of 12, when I left Japan , to say "Place of birth:
