At age 40, she began composing more seriously, and has since produced a large body of works for solo piano, orchestra, ensemble, percussion, voice, and various instrumental concerti. Her music has been performed internationally to critical acclaim. Dianne Goolkasian Rahbee's music reflects her background in its mixture of ethnic influences and formal Western musical training. Her pianistic writing follows a style of the traditional keyboard repertoire using an idiom akin to Prokofieff, Scriabin, and Khachaturian. Her neo-tonal musical language is wed to a strong sense of rhythmic drive, creating highly communicative and effective concert pieces.

Extractions: [72:19] full-price by David Tan Nowadays, young pianists find opportunity in gaining recognition for their talent a great deal more easily than say 20 years ago simply because of the plethora of piano competitions that exist. Even moderate talents would have sufficient merit for the fullest efforts at nurturing it. Despite this, Asians, for some inexplicable reason, are still under-represented in the international concert circuits. In fact, the number that are of international renown can be counted with one's fingers. We have Fou Tsong, Mitsuko Uchida, Eduardo Halim, Frederic Chiu and Melvyn Tan the list doesn't go on very much longer. So it is hardly surprsing that our curiosity is aroused when we find a new Asian face breaking in to the scene.

Extractions: The pianist Glenn Gould (1932-1982) profoundly affected the way people hear, perceive and appreciate music in one of the most unique and fascinating careers in the modern history of classical music. For most of his mature career, Gould did not perform live, reaching his audience instead through a remarkable legacy of recordings and broadcasts now heard exclusively on Sony Classical. On the evening of January 11, 1955, Gould made his debut in New York "Debutown," as he called it and the next day signed a recording contract with Columbia Masterworks (CBS), which would become Sony Classical in 1986. Gould's first recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations took place at the CBS studios in June of 1955. The record won instant acclaim, became a bestseller, and launched the pianist's career as a fully mature international artist. Gould went on to make over sixty recordings for the label. Glenn Gould was born in Toronto on September 25, 1932, into a musical family: Edvard Grieg was a first cousin of his mother's grandfather, his father was an amateur violinist, and his mother played piano and organ. Gould's mother was his only teacher until he was ten. When he was three years old, it became evident that he possessed exceptional musical aptitude, including absolute pitch and even the ability to read staff notation. At five he began to compose, and he played his own little compositions for family and friends. At the age of six, Gould was taken to his first live musical performance, which was Josef Hofmann's last appearance in Toronto. It created a lasting and important impression upon the boy.

QUOTE by Rosalyn Tureck and Margaret Chase Smith. Etta Shiber and Kitty Beaurepos At the time of the German invasion of France, Etta Shiber, American author of Paris Underground (1943), then in her 60's, lived in Paris with her good friend Kitty Beaurepos. They had met in a dress shop on a trip Shiber had made to Paris in 1925. Her book graphically describes the confusion and fear felt by the refugees on the crowded roads, some on foot carrying what possessions they could, others in dog- or horse-drawn vehicles, and some like Shiber-Beaurepos in automobiles - all subject to being machine-gunned and bombed from German planes - and there was no food left anywhere. The two old women stopped at an inn to search for food and found, instead, a British aviator who failed to get evacuated at Dunkirk. They hide him in the trunk of their car and when the Germans caught their refugee column and turned them back to Paris, the aviator - undiscovered - went with them. They hid him in their apartment, finally making contact with the underground to get him out.

Extractions: Performing Arts Library International Piano Archives at Maryland The Collection Her successful pianistic debut in America was January 8, 1905, at Carnegie Hall, with the New York Symphony Orchestra (Walter Damrosch conducting). This was followed by extensive tours in America and Europe. She ranked with the foremost women pianists, such as Clara Schumann, Annette Essipov and Teresa Carreno. Upon the advice of her manager, Henry Wolfsohn, she chose the professional name of Olga Samaroff from a remote Russian relative and used it throughout her career. In 1911, she became the wife of Leopold Stokowski, then at the beginning of his brilliant career as a conductor. Their marriage also ended in divorce twelve years later. Their one daughter, Sonya, married Lieutenant William Thorbecke, the son of a Dutch diplomat. During the 1920s, Samaroff made an extensive series of recordings for the Victor Talking Machine Company, including works of Bach, Chopin, Liszt, Juon, Lecuona, and others. Most of Samaroff's recordings have been reissued on a compact disc produced by Pearl Records of England. An injury to her left arm in 1926 compelled Samaroff to cancel all concerts for the season, after which she accepted the position of chief music critic of the New York Evening Post which she continued for two years. Her broad knowledge, varied musical experience and clear style were highly praised. The Post attempted to retain her for three more years but she declined their offer to devote herself to educational work and lecturing.

Extractions: The Chicago-born Rosalyn Tureck gave her solo recital debut at age 9 and went on to study with Anton Rubenstein and at Juilliard with Olga Samaroff. In 1936, she made her orchestral debut at Carnegie Hall with Eugene Ormandy conducting the Philadelpha Orchestra in Brahms' Piano Concerto in B-flat. Yet she considered Bach's compositions to be the pinnacle of Western music. While practicing a Bach Fugue at age 17, Rosalyn Tureck had an epiphany concerning the structure and form of Bach, and created a new technique in order to realize that structure. For almost half a century, she would play only the music of the Baroque master. In a 1990 NPR interview, Tureck explained, "We can't expect everybody to be always enslaved to only the instruments of that period. And if you don't learn them, the music [of that period] is lost. That goes a little too far... I'm not playing the piano as a Chopin player when I'm playing Bach. I'm playing the piano out of Bach's own structures. And I always say I never tell Bach what to do, no matter what instrument I'm playing, whether on the harpsichord, or the piano, or the organ. Bach tells me what to do."
