Bill And Kent's Place On The Web The end of an era rosalyn tureck dies at 88. rosalyn tureck, a pianist andharpsichordist who devoted more than six decades to performing, researching, http://billandkent.com/blog/archives/000027.htm
Extractions: Main Rosalyn Tureck, a pianist and harpsichordist who devoted more than six decades to performing, researching, teaching and writing about the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, died on Thursday, July 17 at her home in Riverdale, the Bronx. Early in her career, she was an avid interpreter of contemporary music before deciding to focus entirely on Bach. She had an insightful outlook on the music of Back. She felt that it was crucial to understand Bach not as a modern thinker, or as the beginning of music as we know it today, but as the peak of musical development from medieval times through the Protestant Reformation. She would also enthusiastically speak about performances of Bach on electronic instruments. Rosalyn Tureck was born on Dec. 14, 1914, and became interested in the piano when she was 4. Her first teacher was Sophia Brilliant-Liven, a Russian pianist who had been a teaching assistant to Anton Rubinstein. In those days, Bach was widely considered to be primarily didactic music, good for developing students' hand muscles but too dry for the concert hall. She was fascinated by Bach's work. When she was 16, Ms. Tureck moved to New York to study with Olga Samaroff at the Juilliard School. When she entered the Naumburg Competition, she made it to the finals and presented an all-Bach program as her closing recital. As she told the story years later, the members of the jury said they could not give her the award "because they were sure that nobody could make a career in Bach."

WNYC - Music - The Fishko Files The supremely gifted and wildly eccentric pianist Glenn Gould died 20 rosalyn tureck. Collection II, The Young Visionary, Bach recital New York, 1948 http://www.wnyc.org/music/articles/5525
Extractions: The supremely gifted and wildly eccentric pianist Glenn Gould died 20 years ago this October 4. To mark the occasion, this special edition of the Fishko Files, "20 years After Glenn Gould," examines Bach as it is played on the modern piano, especially as it has or has not been influenced by Gould's style. Distinguished pianists Murray Perahia, Vladimir Feltsman, Angela Hewitt, Edward Aldwell, Maria Tipo and Sergei Schepkin are among the participants. The program traces the rise and fall and rise of Bach on the piano, from the years of Wanda Landowska and Rosalyn Tureck, through the Gould years to the present. Ample excerpts of performances by the pianists, as well as by Gould himself, will illustrate the commentary. Glenn Gould's arresting version of the Bach Goldberg Variations, first released in the mid-1950's, brought worldwide attention to both the pianist and the composition. More recordings and performances of Bach followed, in a style so distinctive as to have all but eclipsed other Bach players of his generation. Gould famously chose the recording studio over the concert stage early in his career, declaring, "the concert is dead." Known for his peculiar work habits (most notably his obsession with temperature in the studios) and a contrarian's approach to music in general (he dismissed many of Beethoven's greatest works while becoming fascinated by Petula Clark) Gould was one of the rare classical musicians to cross over into popular consciousness. But before the world knew about the oddities of his behavior, they knew about his Bach playing. It is his performance of the music of Bach and its effect that will be examined in 20 Years after Glenn Gould.

Extractions: Six years later, I arrived in New York, having received a scholarship at the Juillard Graduate School. In my first week at Juillard, I saw a notice on the bulletin board announcing that Theremin was in New York and offering one scholarship to study his electronic instruments with him. My impression of his instruments was unforgettable so I went down immediately for an audition and won the scholarship. I studied with him for an entire year, and it is still little known that I made my debut at the age of seventeen at Carnegie Hall, playing a Theremin electronic instrument in a program that Theremin presented in New York that Spring, 1932. At that time Clara Rockmore became involved with playing the 'Theremin'. She had been a successful concert violinist, but developed some trouble with her hands and could not go on playing the violin. On discovering the Theremin she turned to that and she brought an extraordinary talent, musicianship and adaptability to this instrument. I shall never forget her joint recital with Paul Robeson at the Town Hall in New York. Clara played Bach solo violin sonatas on the Theremin and was able to do double-stops on the instrument, a marvellous technical feat. Lucy Bigelow-Rosen was Theremin's chief patroness, and at that time she financed his operation and activities in New York. She also indulged in some performances on the Theremin.
