Extractions: I have heard the future of Rachmaninoff pianists. His name is Jean-Yves Thibaudet. I've been aware of him being lauded as a great interpreter of Rachmaninoff, but have shied away from even listening to one of his recordings for a few years, because I feared the letdown would be too great, should he not live up to expectations (my breaking point came a couple of years ago, when I started hearing about this "wonderful new pianist, David Helfgott." I bought his CD of Rachmaninoff's Third Psycho That spiel off my chest; now back to Thibaudet: His understanding of Rachmaninoff is totally intuitive Thibaudet's performance of the Fourth Concerto exemplifies this observation. A very difficult piece to perform properly, this is the most satisfying recording I've heard of it, aside from the composer's own. Although the Fourth is generally thought of as a "heavy" concerto (especially as performed by Rachmaninoff and Ormandy), Thibaudet's touch is the very essence of light. He does not play with as heavy a hand as his accompanist, Vladimir Ashkenazy, did in his excellent 1984 recording with Bernard Haitink and the Concertgebouw Orchestra. Extractions: Lyn Bronson We always attend a concert in the hope that a significant musical event will take place, and that the artist performing will weave a web of magic to stimulate our feelings and our intellect. Unfortunately, Jean-Yves Thibaudet's recital for the Carmel Music Society on January 11 at Sunset Center in Carmel left these expectations largely unfufilled. From any viewpoint, it was a curious program. The first half consisted of Debussy's Preludes, Book II, and the second half contained familiar short works by Chopin. The entire program consisted of 25 short pieces, none of which was over six minutes long, and some were as short as a minute or two. There was not one major work on the entire program. Although you might argue that the second book of Debussy Préludes constitutes an extended suite, in truth, in Thibaudet's performance, the Préludes remained static miniatures that limped along on a parallel course and did not achieve a powerful cumulative effect.

He was first attracted to the piano at age 3; learned to play it at age 5 (later learned the violin and even dreamed of conducting); made his first public appearance at age 7; first performed with an orchestra at age 9, playing Ravel's Concerto in G - his prize for winning a competition called the Kingdom of Music. Extractions: No. 2 in E-flat Major Chopin composed these two nocturnes during the years 1830-31, just as he turned 21; in those years he left his native Poland (never to return) and settled in Paris, where this music was published in 1832. Both nocturnes performed on this evening's recital have become famous-almost too famous, in fact-and the challenge for us as listeners is to get beyond the familiar contours of this music and hear it with fresh ears. Already evident in the Nocturne in B-flat minor -the music of a twenty-year old!-is that phenomenal rhythmic freedom that will characterize Chopin's mature work. Throughout, the left hand has an unbroken sequence of eighth-notes, simple arpeggiated chords, while the right hand soars with unexpected freedom: against the steady left hand, the right has patterns of eleven, twenty, and twenty-two notes. The easy freedom of this opening section gives way to a sterner middle section, and then comes the wonderful transition back to the opening material, a famous passage where Chopin lets the music rock along dreamily above seventeen consecutive measures of D-flat major chords. From out of this dream, the return sounds all the more peaceful, and the nocturne makes its way to a quiet resolution.
