Extractions: Larry Porters Berlin Trio plays original compositions of exceptional harmonic beauty with an openness that allows for a maximum of interplay. These three musicians strive to exploit the essence of the triangle where each point is connected to the others. Whether exploring sublime ballads or dancing through sophisticated altered blues, the trio sustains a crystalline tension, creates an entire spectrum of atmospheres, and pushes the boundaries of traditional jazz form. listen to a sample: The Circle Is Unbroken (Larry Porter) LARRY PORTER - piano JOHANNES FINK - bass Born February 28, 1964 in Erlangen, Germany into a musical family; his father is a jazz pianist. Maria Joao Und Mario Laginha Bei Bremme Und Hohensee recorded ten albuns, two of them with the japanese pianist aki takase. With aki, she created one of the most famous and inovator duets of the eighties. http://www.bremme-hohensee.de/joao-laginha_e.htm
Extractions: Her voice seems to be, at the same time strange and natural, and Mário Laginha´s piano sounds perfect for the many influences of Maria João, who never ventures too far from here Portugese backround. Her amazing ability to transform delicate musical structures into tones, words and whispers is singular and simply amazing. Mumadgi is the word used in the Changana dialect of Mozambique, to define a Portuguese European. From January 2001 Mumadgi is also the name Maria João e Mário Laginha will be using to identify their joint project. To join them, they invited two of the musicians who participated on the recordings of their last album the brasilian Toninho Ferragutti and the Norwegian Helge Norbakken. A new album recorded live in Barcelona and Oporto will be release in 2001. The repertoire will be mainly from "Chorinho Feliz" and "Cor" albums. Concerts in the year 2000 were performed in Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto, Washington, Paris, Rio, Munich, Berlin, Weimar, Grorizia, Dublin, and of course in many places in Portugal.
Land Of A Thousand Dances 20 Maria João aki takase, Send in the Clowns Now the singer, well, thesinger s first language is She turns out to be the accompanying pianist. http://www.epicharmus.com/2002_12_01_loatdarch.html
Extractions: Now the singer, well, the singer's first language is most obviously not English. From the sound of it, she's doing it all phonetically. Nearly every word shows signs of a struggle. She blithely misses all those verbal cues native Englishers don't notice until they go wrong in a spectular fashion. Words are often accented in completely the wrong way, as if she's got no experience about what usually means what. She pronounces words apologetically, even go as far as wrecking the rhythm of a line to make sure all those hard consonants are nice and sharp: "...one, who keeps stearing arount..." and "WITH. My UuuZZzzuaaal flaairrr." I've been listening to this for weeks and I've assumed that Takase the one with the Japanese-sounding name was the singer. Ha ha ha, the joke's on me. She turns out to be the accompanying pianist. Maria João is the singer...and she's from Portugal, not Japan. Still sounds Japanese to me. She has a very girlish voice, and nearly every Japanese woman vocalist I've ever heard is girlish-sounding to some degree. (But I listen to a LOT of j-pop so what could I know?)

He lost his mother when he was just 3, and later had to live in an orphanage during WW1 while he father was away fighting in the war. He had played in a number of different bands before he met Gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt, and, with 3 others, formed the 'Quintette du Hot Club de France'. Www.jazzweekly.com | Reviews and improvises often with Japanese pianist aki takase and guitarist Frank Möbus.pianist Mircea Tiberian is one of the most active Romanian jazzers, http://www.jazzweekly.com/reviews/oles_contemporary.htm
Extractions: But using these themes as more than a jumping off point for unconnected soloing had to wait until a group of musicians exists that is as comfortable working on the improv side of the fence as the legit side. It also helped when some contemporary composers got over their snobbish distaste for so-called jazz music. This sea change has been particularly evident in Europe, and that's one of the reasons this CD is so special. Two young Polish players, plus a slightly older German clarinetist and a Romanian pianist, take nine pieces by contemporary Polish composers and transform them using the techniques and freedom of improv. Most notably, they don't "jazz the classics", but metamorphose the existing notation into organically legitimate new pieces. Drummer Bartlomiej Brat Oles, who arranged all the tracks, also throws in a couple of his own tunes here that naturally fuse with the other sounds. Oles and his twin brother, bassist Marcin Oles, provide the Janus-headed hope for contemporary Polish jazz establishing itself as memorable and original. Not only have the two played with local heroes like saxists Mikolaj Trzaska and Adam Pieronczyk, but also with outsiders like American reedist David Murray, German bass clarinetist Theo Jörgensmann and the two foreigners featured here. "Brat", by the way doesn't mean what it seems to for English speakers; it means "brother" in Polish.
Www.jazzweekly.com | Reviews George Lewis, trombone; aki takase, piano; Voyager, interactive computer pianist 2.IST Rhodri Davies, harp; Mark Wastell, cello; Simon H. Fell, bass 3. http://www.jazzweekly.com/reviews/various_audiology.htm
Extractions: That's why these two releases are particularly valuable. Not only do they provide a snapshot of what was happening on that Continent during 2001, but over the three CDs you can sample 18 different bands featuring both veteran explorers and tyro improv investigators. Furthermore, despite the EU and the euro, that body of water that separated Great Britain from the Continent still makes a difference. You'll hear how, as it has been for years, BritImprov is still a lot different than EuroImprov. One rational for this is that Seventh of May, recorded in London, centres on sound recorded by Matchless, the label associated with AMM and pure, almost limitless improv. Meanwhile Audiology was recorded in November 2001 in Berlin by the FMP label, which usually releases the sort of harsher, more unbending improv associated with Northern Europe. In truth, some of the most diffuse sounds on that disc come from IST, the one British band represented, if repeating the fact isn't trafficking in geographical stereotypes.
