Extractions: By JENA PASSUT Of The Daily Oakland Press "He perches on the piano bench like an ungainly swallow, but the sounds that emerge from the Steinway are more beautiful than any a nightingale could make." The description in the Prague Post of his tour with the Czech National Symphony was apt, though world-renowned pianist David Syme says most of that characterization's for the birds. "At my best I feel most like a lion, powerful and commanding," the 6-foot-2-inch musician says. Either way, the music is undeniable. Sitting at his Steinway Grand in his West Bloomfield Township home, his eyes closed, his fingers passing gracefully and then forcefully over the keys, Syme plays a mini concert right there in his lavishly decorated living room. First, he plays Chopin, next, a complicated looking "Rootbeer Rag" by Billy Joel. "I'm more like a rock 'n' roller playing classical music," he huffs. Syme, a 56-year-old Juilliard-trained pianist who performs extensively overseas, will share his knowledge in a lecture series at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield starting Tuesday.
