His parents, violinist mother, Natalia Pogorelova and cellist father Faizul Sultanov immediately identified him as a prodigy. They gave him small violin and start teaching, but he had less than three lessons and after that he smashed the violin. He started to learn piano playing when he was three. I started to play very early. When I was three, I repeated all the melodies, which I heard in radio or television, he said. (Interview in Polish Television) Then he started to learn in Uspensky School in Tashkent with Tamara Popovich. He has his formal debut at the age of seven. In the free time he read books written by Arthur Conan Doyle and practiced Taekwondo. He also started his lessons in Moscow Conservatory with Prof. Lev Naumov, going several times a year by train or plane. When he was 13 years old he participated in the International Radio Competition Concertino Praha in Prague (1982). After graduating the school in Tashkent, together with his parents and younger brother, under seven years, Sergey, Mr. Sultanov moved to Moscow, when he began to study at Central Music School of Moscow Conservatory in the class of Lev Naumov (a pupil of Harry Neuhaus).

The low student-faculty ratio and teaching emphasis of the university give all keyboard students the benefit of close personal contact with their teachers and each other. The small size of the department-around 120 students-ensures that all students have ample opportunity to participate in master classes , weekly studio classes, weekly student recitals, a concerto competition and degree recitals. Keyboard students at UE also have the opportunity to accompany singers, instrumentalists and choirs and to participate in large and small ensembles, benefitting from frequent coachings by different faculty members. Students perform on two Bösendorfer concert grand pianos, four organs made by Holtkamp, Fisk, and Reuter and two harpsichords made by Dowd and Jones. In addition to frequent faculty solo and chamber performances, the Department of Music hosts an organ series

Feedback He seemed to be a less bright pianist than Korchinskaya, rather a showman alexei sultanov who played like on the own concert and on the competition has http://www.mmv.ru/tchaikovsky/otziv/piano1eng.htm
Extractions: Feedback After the playing of first 24 participants we can draw conclusion that the Russian participants are objectively stronger than all foreign participants who played this day. Whether the preliminary selection has given the results or the talented foreign pianists have stopped to come to the Tchaikovsky competition? I think we should address all these questions to the Selection board that have admitted such untalented persons to take part in the competition (we havent heard performings of such a low level for a long time already). Anyway, presently our pianists show quite different performance level. In the other hand, if one would like to appraise Russian participants abstractly or compare them with each other, it is indeed possible to have this or that claim to lay to every one of them. The lack of the musical initiative and of the personal playing is the main shortcoming. Anonymous Press-center information I would like you tell about the brightest impressions of two days. As a rule we remember the best and the worst. I begin from the second ones. The playing of Firsov E. (USA), Ivanov A. (Belorusia), Erzhakovsky R.(Kazahstan), Lim Chong NG (Malaysia) was quiet outstanding. Galios from Greece is a leader in this category of amateurs (so-called). It was for the first time when I heard the whistle in the grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory. He has a "typical" appearance: cross-shoes, crimson shirt and a sincere indignation. If such persons (I don't want to call them by right names) it would be better to give the possibility to take part in such prestige competition to the pupils of our musical school, they play better.

Archives Alexei Sultanov: Cliburn winner struggled with paralysis 11:09 PM CDT on Friday, July 1, 2005 By SCOTT CANTRELL / The Dallas Morning News Mr. Sultanov's physician, Dr. Edward Kramer, said the pianist died in his sleep, probably from a heart attack. "When someone has had a stroke, their chance of survival at five years is roughly 50 percent," Dr. Kramer said. "And most people don't have the complexity of the stroke situation he had, with several areas of the brain affected." Mr. Sultanov was born Aug. 7, 1969, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, then part of the Soviet Union. The son of a cellist and a violinist, he studied with the renowned teacher Lev Naumov at the Moscow Conservatory. A brilliant firebrand of a player, with a huge sound and equally huge technique, he shattered the Cliburn's reputation for rewarding "correct" pianists. "His extraordinary technique was so obvious," said Richard Rodzinski, president of the Van Cliburn Foundation. "I'll never forget the Liszt
