Adolph Kolping had intended to lead an academic life, not a social reformer, but his work with the journeymen made him realize that he should devote his life and efforts to the working people and their organization. Through his example and efforts the journeymen's organization grew. By 1865, over 400 local groups of the journeymen's organization had been established and were functioning throughout Europe and in America. / Annette von Droste-Hulshoff was, beyond doubt, the most gifted and original of German women poets. Her verse is strong and vigorous, but often unmusical even to harshness; one looks in vain for a touch of sentimentality or melting sweetness in it. As a lyric poet, she is at her best when she is able to attune her thoughts to the sober landscape of the Westphalian moorlands of her home. Her narrative poetry, and especially Das Hospiz auf dem Grossen St Bernard and Die Schlacht im Loener Bruch (both 1838), belongs to the best German poetry of its kind.
Extractions: P.M. One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer Master of many styles, he was much sought after as a sideman in the LA musical scene, and played in an original Santanesque band in San Francisco. But he felt his heart and soul still pointed to the Blues and Boogie Woogie. He continued as a sideman, sometimes fronting his own band, touring Hawaii, the Western U.S., the West Coast of Canada, as well as Germany, Holland, and Spain. Then fate decided to step in one night; Kenny had returned from Europe and was sitting in with a band. He smoked them with an original Boogie Woogie composition that a band member remarked sounded a lot like Amos Milburn. When Kenny asked what song he was famous for, the answer was One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer.

Extractions: Wendy Salz Johnston, Michelle Levesque, Jana Poirier Classroom Sundays The Curriculum Committee, chaired by Alicia Van Ooyen, with Anne Saldo, Liza Cranis, and Wendy Salz Johnston working diligently, has spent this past year reviewing each curriculum we have used in the past. Every lesson has been evaluated and associated with one or more UU Principle. Once all curricula have been read and categorized, we will organize all the lessons together by Principle. We will gather other resources for teachers to use to create fun, challenging, and stimulating lessons. We will compile all this into a handbook, designed to give each classroom teacher several different options for each Classroom Sunday, divided age-appropriately. In the homestretch of this year, we are hoping to hire a consultant who has experience in completing this very task. We do need leadership and expertise in the curriculum area and we have no one in the Church with these skills. To expedite the curriculum development, we will work closely with this person to ensure the results we create will work best for our children. Under the untiring leadership of Michele Prichard-Lane, chair of Social Justice Committee, with the never-ending support and enthusiasm of her committee members, Beverly Alison, Cathie Gentile, Donna Perkins-Johnson, Stephanie DuPont, and Linda Van Ligten, the children have experienced the gamut of social responsibilities.

When fires are lit up, windows closed, bed covers taken out of storage. We drink cocoa or hot cider, we pick up that book weve been meaning to read, and we snuggle a little closer with that special someone. And it is the season when pretty young women begin to walk the streets in thick wool sweaters, well-fitting overcoats, and big fluffy boots. It is autumn, and Pasha has captured its sensual essence in this glorious photo shoot. Sharon Met Art. Extractions: In the Wings , a new play with songs by Broadway producer Stewart F. Lane, will premiere Off-Broadway this September in an open-ended run at the Promenade Theatre. To be directed by Jeremy Dobrish ( The Joys of Sex ), the show will begin previews Sept. 9 and tentatively open Sept. 28. The songs are by pianist-composer-performer Michael Garin ( Song of Singapore "I've been thinking about the show for a long time. It's been a kind of generational process," Lane told Playbill.com. "I've been in the theatre my entire lifewriting, directing, organizing. In the Wings is a snapshot of what it was like way back then, long before cell phones." According to Lane, the play is about a young couple, both actors, living in New York in the 1970s. Both are cast in a new musical titled I Married a Communist , but one gets left behind when the show moves to Broadway. Casting is currently underway, though a reading of the play last month at the Barrow Group Studios Theatre featured Nancy Anderson, John Jellison, David Josefsberg, Madeleine Maby, Jake Robards and Jana Robbins.
