Jana recently gave two important benefit concerts for women's shelters in the Montreal area. Domestic abuse is an issue that is close to Jana's heart, as she once experienced an abusive relationship in high school. "I know that it's never a simple situation. The reasons for staying are often complicated. Abuse comes in all shapes and sizes. It effects people from every ethnic background, rich or poor. But the ones who are the most vulnerable are the women and children who are poor, as they don't have the means to leave by themselves. They are the ones I'm playing for." The first concert was for Logifem, a longterm shelter for women and children who are in trouble for various different reasons including domestic violence. It was at the Greenfield Park Pentecostal Church in May 22nd. Jana played the following week at Concordia University's Oscar Peterson Hall, on May 28th, for Multifemmes and Auberge Transition, two domestic abuse shelters, as well as for Women Aware / Femmes Averties, a community outreach group run by former survivors of domestic abuse, that is very active in public awareness and offers weekly support groups. The combined profits of both concerts was $1600. A highlight of the concerts was her performance of "Release My Heart From This Dark Chamber" written especially for Jana by Nancy Telfer. This three movement work depicts the violence, isolation, and unpredictability of domestic abuse. Jana Stuart intends to do a fundraising concert tour of Canada in September 2005, raising money for women's shelters across the country.
