Extractions: Toronto seminal free improvisor Maury Coles passed away Tuesday Sept 4th after a long bout with cancer. Maury believed strongly in the musician's right to instantly compose. He was a founding member of Toronto's free jazz collective CCMC and acted as mentor to a large number of emerging improvisers. Maury always took it upon himself to create an avenue for improvisation. From creating the improvisor's pool, a weekly event that allowed both young and old, new and experienced to share a stage, to traveling the world to play with the world's greatest players. Maury's memory lives on. A Toronto icon is remembered by his friends and associates, AMTM, Abstract and other special guests. International artists such as Le Quan Ninh and Mike Kury will be performing special commissions written specifically for this occasion. Ron Gaskin

Extractions: Allison Cameron by Dawn Lyons Im talking today with free-lan ce composer ALLISON CAMERON in her second-floor flat in Torontos Little Italy. The dormered front room is painted a strong dark blue, but you only notice that later. First you see the stuff two HUGE bookcases filled with CDs. I try to estimate two, four, six, eight, ten times two shelves times how many per shelf.. Allison : Yeah, theres about two thousand. Not fun to move! The centre of the room is a sort of nest formed by a computer, a nice big desk and a MIDI keyboard, all held together by tangled wires. Theres other stuff, too a wooden model sailing ship, looking very nautical against the navy walls, books, chairs, printers, a lava lamp. Allison sits in a chair that swivels from the keyboard to the computer to the desk. Not exactly a shrine to music, more like a forge. The desk has three small stacks of scores on it, and room for more. Me : Do you actually put "freelance composer" down on applications? Allison shrugs: Well, it depends. If its a bank Im an accountant, if its Internet Im a consultant, if its an arts organization Im a composer. Whatever comes along, I can get a job. Right now Ive got two jobs. On top of all the corporate work Ive got two pieces due. One is a Dutch commission my first commission from another country. Me : Your official bio (on the ArrayMusic website: www.vex.net/~rixax/Array.html

POLMO POLPO BLAMESHIFTER + TINKERTOY Polmo Polpo, The Blameshifter, Tinkertoy DJs Utility + Oval Roaster plus local video artists The Music Gallery and Technot jointly present an evening of electronic sound and image manipulation. Polmo Polpo (Sandro Perri) uses hiss, crackle, and drone to create a hypnotic sonic miasma. Tinkertoy (Andrew Wedman / Paul Shrimpton) meet where angularity and the groove collide. The music of the Blameshifter (Tasman Richardson) reflects the urban digital environment from whence it came. DJs Utility and Oval Roaster provide selections from the current experimental techno scene, and local artists fluent in the latest video production technologies add a striking visual component to the night's music.
